This collection of the Carpenters' love songs is excellent for anyone who loves any type of music. Possibly the only band who can count both Sonic Youth and members of Steps as their fans, their perfomances on every song are second to none. The more upbeat songs, such as "Close To You" and "Top Of The World" are pleasant enough, but in my opinion, it is on the more angst-ridden songs where they excell. Like it says in "All You Get From Love Is A love Song", 'the best love songs are written with a broken heart'. "Rainy Days and Mondays", "Superstar" and "This Masquerade" are all perfect, and my personal favourite, "A Song For You", is the ultimate song that sums up all of the emotions which love encompasses. The Carpenters manage to do melancholy ... Read More:

This is by far one of the best and most reasonably priced compilations of America's famous male crooner's. It's a shame, but so much emphasis was placed back then on Frank Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, Bing Crosby and Tony Bennett, but when you listen to the extraordinary "ease" and "sincere comfort" and "charm" of Dean Martin's voice, your heart melts. He was that good! Besides his excellent vocal rendition/recording of "Ain't That A Kick in The Head", there appears to be few big production Big Band recordings with Dean Martin. He should have done numerous songs with Nelson Riddle as his music conductor and arranger. With the exception of Harry Connick, Jr., Brian Setzer, Michael Poss, Michael Crawford, ... Read More:

I first saw "The Singing Detective" back in the 80's and even as a teenage punk I fell in love with the music, this was my first taste of "JAZZ".Over the years I dabbled in "Jazz" becoming a long time fan but only when I saw "The Singing Detective" again on DvD was I impulsed to by this boxset. All the songs from the Tv series are here plus many more in a same style from the 40's and 50's OVER 3 hours of pure pleasure.Perfect for those evenings in. One of the best buys this year from Amazon so far and at a very good price, a must have for all "The Singing Detective" fans.

This CD is fabulous for anyone to listen to but my 18 month old daughter has always loved it too. We play her tracks 18 till 23 (the end) every night as she goes to bed and Bing's velvet tones do the trick every night. A word of caution: these soporific songs often have the same effect on my husband and I as we listen via the baby monitor!

I've been trying to think what to write about this album for the past five minutes but I just don't know how to put it. All I can say is that this is some of the most beautiful music you could ever hope to own. Of all the oldies like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, Nat King Cole has the most amazing voice and way of singing.
There are about ten standout, unforgettable songs (pun intended), including "For All We Know", "Smile", "When I Fall In Love", "The Very Thought Of You", and "Unforgettable".
Then of the remaining ten, seven or eight tracks are great. There are a few other faster songs that just didn't appeal to me like "Straighten Up And Fly Right" and "Ramblin' ... Read More:

This compilation is a great staring point for new fans of Cole Porter. It features renditions of his songs by some of the biggets names around. Sound quality is variable in places as the source materials are now getting old. E.g. Cole Porter, Marlene Dietrich and Billie Holiday sound a bit muffled but Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby later recordings sound great. This does not detract as it lends a bit of character and'sepia tinting'to a record looking into the past. Not your usual sterile 24 bit sound.. blah blah blah! It says Soho recordings but the Label company is Union Square- a good label i have bought other high standard compilations from before. Worth it!

I can't agree with Y.O. Barton. This CD is a useful adjunct to Piaf's studio recordings, only seven of the tracks were recorded in "some American music hall" (Carnegie Hall, actually!) the rest are from the famed Olympia in Paris, recorded betwen 1955 and 1962, and demonstrate something of her power as a live performer. The english version of "Les Amants d'un Jour" may not quite have the subtletly of the original (how do you translate "...ce decor, banal a pleurer" using the same number of syllables? - impossible) but it still packs quite a punch, and I still play it to newcomers to Piaf who don't know French. Most are visibly moved by it, so don't knock it!

I only realised that Charles Trenet was the singer of such classics as La Mer when he died. I am not of his era, but I bought the CD and it is superb. I can put it on in the car, in the middle of stalled traffic, and be transported to the French countryside. And my 3 year old daughter also fell in love with it.
