The Noel Coward Album
This album was recorded live in Las Vegas and New York between 1955 and 1956 and shows Noel Coward in cabaret at his best.
The album starts off with a medley of some of his most popular songs including 'I'll See You Again', 'Dance, Little Lady', 'Poor Little Rich Girl' etc and progresses on to some quite humorous songs such as 'Uncle Harry', 'A Bar on the Piccola Marina' and 'Alice is at it Again'.
Some of the lyrics of the songs have been changed to suit the audiences of the time, such as Noel's version of Cole Porter's 'Let's Do It'.
This album is well worth investing in, it has everything - wit, great tunes and wonderful lyrics.

Even 39 years after loosing Judy Garland, her magic is still with us in this album, and all her other recordings. Whatever the ups and downs of her life so sadly cut short, she remains not only a Star but the only star, and that star still shines ever bright.

This is the first of Sinatra I had ever heard. I don't want to bore you so ill get straight to the point. The music is played flawlessly, the recording quality is fantastically clear, Dean Frank and Sammy are such amazing performers that they will leave you wanting to listen to so much more of their work. A great start into the exploration of jazz and Sinatra.

I suppose you are not going to buy this without knowing something about the music you are going to get. The playlist is a nice mix of jazzy dance tunes that conjure up images of speakeasies and flappers, and familiar songs that have been covered by later artists and so found their way into our consciousness.
Just keeping these recordings alive is amazing in itself, so don't expect crystal clear, noise-free reproduction, though it is actually remarkable good. Just imagine it is being replayed on a wind-up gramophone and the occasional crackle and hiss becomes all part of the nostalgic experience.

I rarely listen to swing or jazz and have therefore never appreciated mainstream Sinatra. Typically of this musical genre, orchestrations rely heavily on improvisatory jazz harmonics, and the singing often resorts to mauling around the timing and intonation of melodic lines to achieve the signature vocal style. Of course these are the very qualities that many will find so appealing in Sinatra's better known music. This style remains evident in his early melancholy themed compilations with Nelson Riddle such as "In The Wee Small Hours" and "Only The Lonely", and these albums may be preferred by those who enjoy conventional Sinatra.
So why is this album different?
Gone is the 'Come Fly With Me' style. Instead there are lush, soaring string orchestrations ... Read More:

Born Frances Gumm, this brilliant singer-actress eventually adopted the name Judy Garland (after an interim period as Frances Garland). Her personal problems, compounded by the pressures of work, are well documented elsewhere, but Judy became extremely popular and successful despite (or maybe helped by) these problems.
Judy Garland's music has retained its popularity far in excess of most of her contemporaries, partly because of her outstanding singing but partly due to the popularity of the movies in which many of the songs were featured. The songs that most people remember Judy for are all here, especially Over the rainbow, Easter parade, The boy next door, On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe and Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
