Completely disagree with other reviewer, and seeing he bought it at a sale he shouldn't be carping. My wife bought this set for me as a Christmas present [from Amazon] a few years ago, and I love it. It states plainly on the Box that these are the Nashville Years recordings from 1961-1965, and that is the main reason I wanted this set, as I regard these items as some of Burl Ives greatest recordings, as marrying that unique voice to some great songs is a work of genius. This set contains a vast wealth of the various Styles that Burls' voice fitted like a glove. You have Cowboy Songs, Gospel Songs, Hawaiian Songs, 1940's. Pop songs ie. By the Light of the Sivery Moon,Jealous, Melancholy Baby etc.,and of course Burls' own Country hits plus some ... Read More:

It isn't just the haunting quality of Billie Holiday's voice that captivates the listener, but the unique way she manoeuvred it between and around the written notes in a way that gave an added dimension to everything she sang, whilst respecting the songwriter's intentions. So it is here, in these late recordings, made less than eighteen months before her untimely death. It's short measure, but 45 minutes was fairly standard for an LP when these tracks were recorded, and what could you add that would not detract from what is here? Of course the voice is not the glorious instrument it once was, but to criticise these recordings for that decline is to miss the point. Classic Monologues

Anyone who likes the sort of monologues that were a staple of music hall and the sort of thing that older family members used to recite at parties will love this collection. I bought it several years ago on vinyl, and the content was old-fashioned even then, but it is a gem and if you play it often enough you'll find yourself reciting along with it. Not only for the old fogies - I believe kids would really enjoy this one too.

I do not like live recordings appearing on CDs when I am expecting the studio cuts that I wanted to buy! This double CD, although containing some classic material was very disappointing for me, as most of the 'big titles' are live. Piaf was a wonderful artist, both live and in the studio but as one who prefers studio recordings, I feel a little cheated. If sufficient information had been available in the listing or on the CD packaging, it would have saved me from wasting my money!

Dean Martin had two separate hit-making periods - in the fifties with Capitol and in the sixties with Reprise. The early sixties were not successful in the charts, although Dean continued to record albums and was also kept busy in other ways. You would normally have to buy his Capitol and Reprise recordings separately. This is the second British CD spanning both.

Many of the songs that are associated with Dean are to be found on the first volume, so if you are thinking of buying this, you should either own that already or buy the two together. There are many excellent songs here, but it makes no sense to buy this except as a companion to the first.

Justice is done to Welsh-born composer, pianist, actor and man of the theatre Ivor Novello in this Naxos CD. The artists who first performed them are heard in 18 items, recorded between 1917 and 1950. Ivor Novello himself is heard in two of them, providing some spoken repartee as he accompanies Edna Best at the piano. Most were recorded in the 1930s. The sound quality is good enough for the lyrics to be clearly heard. They bespeak a long-vanished era, but the music still has charm.

Film buffs can nowadays most easily see Ivor Novello in an Alfred Hitchcock film of 1926, "The Lodger". Actor Jeremy Northam portrayed him in the recent film, "Gosford Park". Ivor Novello starred in his last production, "King's Rhapsody", and died nine days before I saw it ... Read More:

Sinatra At The Sands

This album is one of the best if not the best live albums I own. The show has superb reviews already and that goes without saying. I give it five stars not only for the performance but also the recording. If you turn it up loud and shut your eyes you can imagine the "Sands" with the slight crowd noise and odd "chinking" of the glasses in the audience and really feel and almost see that you are right in the middle of the auditorium with this fantastic band in front of you along with the worlds greatest singer - it's that good!
