John recorded many fine albums so while these two are not my favorites they are extremely good, filled as they are with many great songs - typical of John's albums.
Poems prayers and promises, John's fourth album, was his first really big seller, making the top twenty in the American album charts on the strength of one hit single, the evocative and catchy Take me home country roads, which made number two in the American pop charts. It didn't chart in Britain until Olivia Newton-John covered the song - she had a UK top twenty hit with it in 1973. Another song from the album, Sunshine on my shoulders, became an American number one hit three years after the album's original release. Other outstanding songs here include My sweet lady, ... On the crowded shelf of Billie Holiday "Best of"s a little guidance would be helpful, so here goes: You can roughly divide her career into 4 recording periods: 1. Columbia - 1935 - 1942, 2. Commodore mostly 1944, 3. Decca 1940s, 4. Verve 1950s. This "Best of" covers period 1 only, but what a period it was! The young Billie Holiday was the complete article right from her first recording. Her voice fits perfectly into the small groups at this time with musicians taken from some of the great swing bands of the day such as Artie Shaw, Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, Ben Webster, Buck Clayton, Freddie Green, Roy Eldridge and her most sympathetic collaborator Lester Young who christened her Lady Day. Sheer class! Unusually for a jazz singer, she doesn't ... Read More:

By the time Sassy recorded this album in 1987, the years of singing were beginning to catch up with her, so it is understandable that she decided to record an album of love songs. Sergio Mendes, a noted figure in Brazilian music, produced the album. The songwriters are unfamiliar to me but most of the songs were co-written by Dori Caymmi or Milton Nascimento, though these two never wrote any of these songs together.
The main musicians are George Duke (keyboards), Alphonso Johnson (bass), Dan Huff and Dori Caymmi (guitars), Carlos Vega (drums) and Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). Guest musicians are brought in as required to play flute, lyricon, tenor sax, alto sax, flugel horn, trumpet and acoustic bass. Backing all of these are a myriad of musicians ... Read More:

Bobby Darin seemed to touch everything except Beatles Music-he would have got round to it if he'd lived long enough.
His version of If I were a Carpenter is definitive.
For him it began with one lost night when both he and Connie Francis were total unknowns and he covered Lonnie Donegan's Rock Island Line.
2 years later he'd begun a chart career with some groovy rock'n'roll before reinventing himself a year later as a Sinatra clone.
He was accused of copying Sinatra but so what-everybody copies.Even Sinatra who in 1960 copied Bobby Darin!
Yes that's perfectly true as Frank put out a version of Old McDonald had a farm-ascloseasthis to Darin's version of Clementine where each verse rose up a semitone. Never anywhere near a Sinatra fan ... Read More:

This CD was fantastic value. It's the original film soundtrack and has the added bonus of not only including all your favourites from this classic film but also almost the complete film score. If you have a relative who loved the film this is an ideal present or if you are involved in a production or know someone who is, it will really support them.
Buy this and your guaranteed to be singing some where over the rainbow in less time than it takes to follow the yellow brick road !

If you liked 'Songs for Swinging Lovers', you'll love the more sophisticated jazz of this later take on that Sinatra magic. Post-Nelson Riddle and pre-Quincy Jones, this is mid-period Sinatra at his best. The songs are sublime and Basie's deceptively simple arrangements and superb piano give that famous voice room to breathe. If you have yet to own a Sinatra album, make sure it's this one.
