I have one gripe concerning this CD: it is at full price, though the recordings are 40 years old, and it only plays for 37 minutes. Apart from that, it is a delight and it was a favourite of Otto Klemperer's, no less. He especially loved "Alma", about the loves of Gustav Mahler's wife.

Bought after hearing the track Common People on You Tube and to be quite honest expecting a dire experience- how wrong could we be.
Refreshing, amusing well arranged and written - a triumph for Shatner and co - very very well done. I wish it every success.

As befits anything given the nod of approval by legendary Pope of Trash John Waters, and as anyone who owns some of his movie soundtracks will expect, this collection is suitably bizarre, bewildering and at times outrageous - and therefore the perfect antidote to traditional Xmas collections (begone, Slade and Wizzard!) All the tracks have a certain mad charm, from inspired covers of classics such as Tiny Tim's Antony-and-the-Johnsons-esque Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Alvin and the Chipmunks' annoying Sleigh Ride, to bizarre original ditties such as the Santa-abusing Xmas-hating Here Comes Fatty Claus and the funky I Wish You a Merry Christmas (from the original artist behind the Locomotion, no less!). Two favourites stood out for ... Read More:

I had not heard any music by this group prior to borrowing a copy of this album - however, this is an excellent Christmas album. As you would expect from a gospel group, they focus almost exclusively on the religious aspect of the festival, the sole exception being White Christmas. There is a different guest singer on each track except the opening and closing tracks, which are without guests.
With any album featuring a variety of guests, one's favorites depend to some extent on one's opion of the various guests. For example, my favorite guest is Shelby Lynne, who does a fine duet of The Christmas song - however, it's not quite my absolute favorite track. That distinction goes to Chrissie Hynde singing In the bleak midwinter, almost ... Read More:

While Allan will rightly remembered for his classic comic song about a group of schoolboys on an outdoor camping holiday, he made other great records too, some of which can be found here.
Allan was a great lyric writer – apart from Hello Muddah hello Fadduh, he wrote many other witty songs including Sarah Jackman. He also wrote new lyrics to well-known songs, including Crazy downtown (a parody of Petula's classic Downtown) and You're getting to be a rabbit with me (a parody of the thirties classic You're getting to be a habit with me, which with its original lyrics has been recorded by many singers including Bing Crosby and Diana Krall). I have heard several parodies of Twelve days of Christmas but Allan's version is as good as any of them. Read More:

So much has been written about Sigue Sigue Sputnik over the years... the talk of overhype in 1986, the amount that their contract with EMI was worth, Tony's pineapple haircut and the sexuality of Martin Degville.
What all of this nonsense neglects is the fact that music is an entertainment business and these boys delivered the goods. So, here we have a chance to get your hands on a good slice of their back catalogue on one easy to access CD and well worth the money it is too. It's genius to start with the trailer mix of Love Missile because it sounds as if the guys are having a laugh back at all the media attention. What grabs you all the way through this collection of songs is the catchy guitar riffs, Tony James's space bass lines, the relentless tempo and Degville's ... Read More:

When I first heard the album on tape (via vinyl) I was all of about 12 and didn't understand some of the jokes. But looking back some of these jokes now make sense. He really was years and years and years ahead of his time. No, I'm not exaggerating, I really do mean it. His comedy mixed and intersperced with great words making for amusement rather full blown comedy (although some of it is down to personal taste.) Having said that I would recommend this album along with 'That was the Year that was' and 'Revisited' because they're sio absolutely hilarious in places and genuis right the way through from start to finish. Tom Lehrer is a true genius combining his style-mixed Music and great words, and rerally is years and years and years ahead of his time. Nobodyelse would be able, in ... Read More:
