This choir is based in the village where I used to live and where I was married. The songs are not traditional "FA-la-la-la", "Jingle Bells" fare, giving a spark of variety to Christmas music. This choir has a wonderful reputation and recently was named the principal choir for the Toronto Mendolsohn choir. A great addition to any choral music (or Christmas music) lover's collection.

I first came across this recording when my father bought it on vinyl. It was in danger of being the first record I had ever worn out, so I bought another copy as soon as I saw it was available on CD some years ago.
It is a winning combination of a top-class brass band and choir. The musical arrangements are wonderful, as are the performances, especially that of the band; crisp, clear, precise and accurate, yet played with soul and sensitivity. The choir, too, bring much feeling to their contributions. My particular favourites are the Christmas Festival overture, For Unto Us and the finale, Christmas Fantasy.
If you like brass bands and choirs, you must have this recording in your collection. And if it doesn't put ... Read More:

I bought this CD on a recommendation. If I had heard it first I probably would not have. The music needs a fair bit of listening to but perseverance will pay off. More interesing than beautiful this is a good recording for expanding your musical taste.

If you're a lover of Christmas music which has that German/Austrian feel, then this is for you. There is a varied selection of vocal music, organ music, instrumental music. Don't expect to be able to join in a sing-along-a-christmas selection, but there is an excellent performance of the original version of "Stille Nacht" for duet, chorus, strings and horns - the disc is worth buying for that! (Go to the Silent Night website and you can download the music.)

For me the interesting thing about Coleridge-Taylor is that there is a familiarity about his work on first hearing. I suspect this is because he was such a prominent composer in his day and greatly influenced contemporary and later composers. His tragedy was dying so young and so his fame was quickly outshone. I can almost guarantee that the Petite Suite de Concert will have a comfortable familiarity about it for you even though this will almost certainly be the first time you've heard it. Charles Elford - author of Black Mahler The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Story

This is a superb CD - showing off Purcell's marvellous diverse talent for composing superb music for all occasions - the first part is celebratory, with bright voices at a lively pace. The second part is music for Queen Mary's funeral and is contemplative, solemn and majestic. I loved it - as I love all Purcell music. Glad to hear Classics FM play him more nowadays - previously hardly ever. Anyone who enjoys music by Handel will enjoy this.
