Winley records may not be as well known as the infamous Sugerhill label but was certainly just as influencial during the late 70's/early 80's in breaking the hip hop sound onto vinyl.
The first Bambaata tunes debuted on Winley as well as his much sought after bootleg "Death Mix Live".
Not unlike Sugarhill, Winley was also family affair with Anne, Paulette & Tanya Winley all gracing themselves on wax. The pick of the bunch being the hard to find "Vicious Rap" by 'Sweet Tee' Tanya, which was sampled to good effect on Diamond D's classic "Best Kept Secret".
This compilation also features some of the best soul & funk of that era. Crate diggers will be pleased to see the inclusion ... Read More:

This is a very credible collection of records compiled by J Saul Kane (most famously known for his production work under the name 'Depth Charge') with accompanying liner notes written by David Toop, a writer with a long standing involvement and appreciation of Hip Hop.
As Toop notes, Hip Hop as a musical artform was once largely the preserve of "isolated flashes of brilliance", as seen in the fact that the early years of Hip Hop and Electro-Funk were dominated by artists working and releasing material on 12" singles, often on obscure Record labels and issued in relatively small numbers. Quite naturally, as the years have passed, this obscurity and paucity of early material has led to a growing interest in many of the artists and producers ... Read More:

The seismic changes that created hip hop and rap are best heard in the context of a contemporary mix, and this album will have you on your feet instantly, wishing you'd been there when it first happened. A stellar collection, with few of the obvious choices; even Kraftwerk and YMO sound fresh in this context. And tracks such as Babe Ruth's "The Mexican" and Eddie Drennon's "Do What You Gotta Do" are fantastic discoveries, like superhits from a parallel universe. This album has the lot - soul, funk, r'n'b, hip hop, disco and rap - all in one beautifully melodic package.

First of all - this does not sound at all like Van Halen. It is a tribute to them, in various musical styles, which often allow the Van Halen's songs to shine on their own without the technical prowess of Edward Van Halen et al.
In the reinterpretations offered here there are a few songs which really stand out. The Vic Firecracker Orchestra's all strings, plus spoken word, offering: 'Little Guitars', for instance, couldn't be further removed from the original. This, like many other songs, stand out so much more than anything on the 'Van Halen 2000' tribute, in which several 80's rock stars belted out Van Halen clones as closely as possible.
The bands involved have clearly had a lot of creative input on this one and it's paid ... Read More:

a good album, containing an excelent chilled, soulfull hip hop section in the middle with friendly pressure being a real delight and one of the best on the CD. has some great hip hop from the likes of N.E.R.D. and others.
a good journey through beats and well worth a listen
Release Date March 27, 2000
listening to this cd while driving and relaxing is great. the smoothness of both the Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash is striking. I mean nowadays the only rappers close to this are 213 and Tha Dogg Pound (oh and TI and LL Cool J, to an extent).
Rappers delight is phenomenal, it just reaps of crasy ryhmes and a fantastic beat. I have to admit Rappers Delight and 8th Wonder are briliant songs. I have played it to a number of people who say they dispise rap and they almost all like listening to Sugarhill now, asking me to play it in my car to my mates and girlfriend alike.
A must for any hip hop fan, just like Tupac's Greatest Hits, Straight Outta Compton, Doggystyle and Dogg Food.

This album does have some cracking songs but they are not the full 12 versions and most tracks are just faded out. It is very frustrating listening to the classic sounds of White Lines and just when you are starting your first attempt of a head spin, it goes quiet half way through. The good side it is at buget price and its 14 tracks of bliss.
