The clearance issue here clearly dents this box set especially near the end where there are some stunning omissions. Like it says in the accompanying book most R&B and hip hop coexisted as one and in many ways this is how the cds pan out. Yet there is no real evolution of how we got todays R&B and one gets a sense that more time was spent putting together the early stuff than the most recent stuff (currently the biggest selling genre in the name of Beyonce and Justin Timberlake). Case in point is the absence of MJ's Billie Jean: a mystery! So if you're an R&B you'll be pleased with Mary J blige's appearance but gobsmacked as too why there is no Salt N Pepa nor TLC. CD1 is excellent, as it has the real electro classics. Planet Rock, Play at you own risk, Play that beat Mr DJ, Pack Jam.. Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force, Jonzun Crew and Planet Patrol, all great bands, that influenced a lot of todays wanabes.

This is where Hip Hop started and will always be remembered by me...

Sorry CD2 is not all that ;-(

Brekdance, body pop, do a windmill, relive the good old days :-)

EPMD's final album. A superb piece, but marred slightly by the fact that the greatest hits CD is possibly even better. Great old classic cuts, truly the cream and the first CD shines with Symphony 200. A classic album, and well worth any money you pay. Get the double version though. Always.

I started DJ'ing with with Sugar Hill imports as a staple in my record bag from 1980 onwards.

The trouble with these retrospective GMF and the FF compilations is that in reality the important DJ influence of Grandmaster Flash only actually appears on a few of the early tracks included here. Too many of these ex-Sugar Hill Records compilations lead one to believe that he was involved in such big hits as "The Message" and "White Lines" - which he was not.

I think that the only track that really makes a mark is the seminal "Adventures......" - can you believe that was 1980 and basically mixing in real-time. Thankfully, since those genre busting days, Flash has cut his own niche and you can find them offered on Amazon. ... Read More:
