I remember listening to this in the mid-eighties (a time after it was released) via listening to Mark Stewart & The Maffia. It's great to realise that some of these that almost started it all carried on in the form of On-u sounds, etc. and went on to influence the Bristol sound. Keith LeBlanc, Skip McDonald and Doug Wimbish once members of the Sugar Hil Gang (Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five) came over to Britain and joined in the Bristol Dub scene (Mark Stewart, Tackhead, Adrian Sherwood, Gary Clail, etc.). Where would Bristol trip-Hop have been without them?

In late 1985 Kurtis Mantronik and MC Tee released 'Fresh Is The Word' as a 12" single on the New York based 'Sleeping Bag Records', and as a result of the success of that single - which had an immediate impact on the Hip Hop community - were able to go on to release this, the simply titled 'The Album'.
From the moment you hear the introduction to 'Bassline' you know that this is different. Mantronix always had a unique sound, and here there is an immediate air of purpose and menace to the music. This is Hip Hop, but it isn't Hip Hop by numbers, and it isn't about slavishly following the predominant musical Hip Hop blueprint of the time. This can be seen in the crisp introduction of 'Needle To The Groove' (latterly sampled by Beck and The ... Read More:

This album makes it onto so many "best of" lists and after listening to it it's not hard to tell why.
Whilst some Eric B's beats may not be as revolutionarily fresh as they were back in 1987, they still hold up. The James Brown sampled "I Ain't Know Joke" and title track "Paid in Full" are still as funky as the day they were cut (and, to be fair, I like the synthy sounds of the old-school tracks like "Move The Crowd" and "Eric B is President" anyway).
The main reason to buy this album, though is Rakim's emcee-ing ability. This album shows why he is rightly regarded as the greatest MC of all-time.
This album is the 2-disc platinum edition, meaning you also get the classic Coldcut remix of the title track (one of the best remixes ... Read More:

Ive heard all the ministry compilations and id say that this one and the old skool volume 2 one are by far the best. Both are probably the best representation of the eras without any terrible commercialised tunes. Though i recommend for the real deal in old skool search out an independant music store where they have live mixes and performances, digitally re-mastered by top DJ's and PA's from back in the day, for exapmle i have a graeme park mix from the Hacienda in 1989 with hip hop and house classics with all the noisey atmosphere of a real rave, which i think is much better. In conclusion buy this if you have to, but otherwise go for the live acts thing if you want the real deal

Certainly a little drabber thats for sure. If you can't face wading thru all the albums and if your bank account can't stretch that far (really??) then this one fits the bill. Not the worlds greatest rapper but good solid and entertaining showman. You will not be disappointed and this is pretty good value for money.
If you are buying it for someone else new to his work then this is a great starting point to his work. Who knows you could expand his fan club for him!
I saw the track listings and saw one song that made me get the CD: Hey DJ. I had wanted to get that song since 1984. I then looked at the other tracks and knew that this was the one CD I would be proud to have in the collection.
This CD really takes me back to my childhood days, when just about everything that was on the radio was hot. That includes the Pop and Soft Rock that was coming over from the UK and everywhere else in the world. Breakdancing was "in" and boy, was it fun to watch. In fact, there was a guy in my elemetary school class by the name of Maurice Hatter. Man, this guy could "break"! He did the Pop-Lock, Moonwalk, Helecopter, and Robot all the time!! He was so good that he was easily voted as best dancer by the 8th Grade graduating ... Read More:
