This DVD version of the famous Red Rocks concert has been a long time coming and it does not disappoint. It is great to have the whole concert restored and the missing tracks are so good one wonders why they were ever omitted fom the original VHS version. The most impressive aspect of this release is the improved sound. The bass in particular is awesome, and I can hear phases from Adam Clayton that I have never been able to hear before. Edge's guitar is equally impressive and the whole sound picture is perfetly balanced.

I was going to mention Clapton's christening of the Les Paul, Marshall setup, but others have beaten me to it. I liken it's impact to what happened to harp playing when Little Walter and other's deciding to blow through the PA or an early guitar amp. They REDEFINED the sound of the instrument.

So all I'll add is the rhetorical question...can you imagine being a teenage Brit, having been reared on the sounds of the Beatles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, or even the Dave Clark Five, wandering into a London club because someone had recommended the Bluesbreakers, and hearing THIS STUFF? James Morrison reminds me of Terence Trent Derby with his distinctive vocals and cut down style,very few musical instruments,often just acoustic guitar and drums.Echoes of Stevie Wonder and chords and melodies that have a passing resemblance to other artists' songs complete the mix.I really like this album but it wasn't one that i liked first time of hearing.It's an album you need to play and let it grow on you.It's a little raw and naive in places and a little like a live recording of a busker on a city street corner.No bells and whistles,just a guy relying and believing in his talent.This gives it some originality and credit to James Morrison on producing a stunning album that may not be for everyone but will be enjoyed by most.Recommended.

Throughout their career Radiohead have proven that they can:

1) Write very captivating songs in a specific mood;
2) Challenge convention and deftly experiment to great effect.

For example, the PH and The Bends slots nicely into category (1), OK Computer between the two, KID A and Amnesiac firmly in (2), HTTF between the two but leaning towards (2), and In Rainbows -

Between the two once more, but with an inclination towards category (1) - the 'song'. With this angle, the band produced a nice album, one I have listened to many times (ALL Radiohead albums have an excellent shelf life, and I really do mean the word 'captivating'). Monkey: Journey to the West

I have been a keen advoate of all things Damon Albarn post-Graham Coxon (i.e., Blur's `Think Tank` and beyond) so was understandably quite excited by the album release of `Monkey, Journey to the West`. I had not seen the Chinese opera-spectacular which this album scores but I didn't let that dissuade me from pre-ordering this one from Amazon. What I hadn't realised was that this 22-song collection largely comprises incidental compositions from the opera and doesn't stand up as an album in its own right. Unless you have seen the opera - in which case this might make a compelling souvenir - I feel duty-bound to warn you not to expect something on the scale of other Albarn side-projects such as Gorillaz' `Demon Days`, `Mali Music` or `The Good, the Bad and the Queen`.

Consolers Of The Lonely

I never usually get albums on their day of release; what I normally do is wait for reviews and then go out and buy the album but with Consolers of the Lonely this was not the case. I applaud the raconteurs for bypassing the music press and just letting the fans enjoy the music without some high almighty critic clouding their better judgement. This album is another belter from Jack and co. The album starts off with the hypnotic groove of the near title track Consoler of the Lonely topped off with White's trademark solo we have all come to love. Before you have time to digest the opening song Salute Your Solution bursts in with The Raconteurs heaviest rock songs to date with interlude of a psychedellic keys giving you a moments breather before storming back into gear.
