It took a few listens to work out what exactly it was about this album that I love so much: space. Every note is given the chance to breathe, allowing the random noises (it was recording in a barn apparently) to seep into the mix. It makes the whole thing sound live, yet the actual music is far too perfect for that to be more than a pipe dream. Godspeed comparisons are inevitable, yet these dudes make post-rock from a completely different perspective; with a definite surf influence present and a subtle use of electronic tweaks 'n' effects, both of which give the music a wholly unique sound. The towering climaxes are there too, yet the journey is just as important as the final destination. Remember that.

This short CD (20 minutes) is quite deceiving. It does indeed sound minimalist when you play it from start to end but there's more to this release than meets the eye (or the ear in this case). In fact, the three tracks are really one track deconstructed into three separate pieces.
After a little digging around I discovered that all three tracks, if played at the same time, form an amazing single track!
Despite the tracks being different lengths they bond together really well. The only way to play 3 tracks at the same time is to rip them to your computer and use an audio editing program to recompile them; each track starts from the same point, so line them up at the very beginning and rip into an uncompressed format to ... An utterly timeless and beautiful album from one of the most amazing guitarists today, David Pajo. Comprising of a series of crystalline spiralling melodies which could almost be considered lullabies if it was not for Pajo's clinical, icy delivery. The album thus provides an incredible tension between the precise production, the sparse percussion and minimal bass, the monochrome cover and an irrepressible heart warming feeling felt by listening to sound so undiluted and beautiful. Before you become too intoxicated however there is a counter rhythm, a dissonance or a climax that never comes- like staring into the eyes of a black and white picture of a supermodel in a magazine. This is an album of deconstruction, and as you listen to the layers unravel youll soon ... Read More:

This, in my opinion, is Stereolab's best collection of work. It is a brilliant showing of what they do best: grinding organs, blissful beats and hypnotic loops. It is intense and inspired.
I cannot think of another band who can hold one note for several long minutes and yet make it the most exciting piece of music imaginable.
Highly recommended to indie fans, dance fans, and even jazz fans who appreciate expert organ playing.
I have a large and eclectic music collection and this, I feel I should mention, is by far my favorite album for driving at night. Whenever I have to cruise down a motorway at night this is the first thing I'll put on. Give it a go and I guarantee you'll see what I mean!

Smog's `Red Apple Falls' is arguably alt-country in the truest sense of the definition; traditional country instruments such as pedal steel guitar, Hammond and piano are employed with Bill Callahan's unconventional musical vision to create something new and wonderful.
The album throughout is spare, unsettling and haunting. The mournful horn refrain and pessimistic lyric of `The Morning Paper' sets the tone for the record. `Red Apples' is so skeletal with its piano accompaniment; the lyrics to this song and several others evoke weirdly nightmarish imagery with repeating motifs.
The two real upbeat songs, `I Was a Stranger' and `Ex Con', both tell tales from the outsider's perspective. The former impresses particularly with its narrator's self ... Read More:
