Solomon Burke's latest CD is a personal and understated if not sparse affair. For most of his career the man from Philadelphia has been switching between country and soul, often choosing songs from the (white) country tradition but singing them with (black) preacher type phrasing. Until recently Burke's accompaniment also stuck to traditional soul patterns. Nothing wrong with that! Now, once again, there is not a sax or trumpet in sight. If anything this CD is even more introspective than its predecessor. Is it good? Yes, but I'm beginning to believe it's not as good as the three preceding ones, Don't give up on Me, Make do with what you've got and Nashville. My ideal verdict would be three and a half stars but that is not possible.

Have bought quite a few albums recently and been generally disappointed but this one is great! There are no tracks that you want to skip! The mixture of music genres all in one album is brilliant which came quite unexpected for me. Can't stop playing it!

I like many others recently dug this cd out of my collection.Most of you will think you are familiar with this work but let me assure you that you are not!!! The melodies and beats on this album are beyond ctiticism even for those of you that do not like hip-hop.A soulful set that will; in time, without question be regarded as a swansong to the twentieth century.Truly a classic which I think the fact no follow up album has been released testifies to the musical genious of Ms.Hill.How exactly do you follow up hip-hop/soul/r'n'b perfection? Lyrically and musically this album set a benchmark that has not really been matched within black music.

In my honest opinion this is Chaka's finest work in quite a few years. Soulful, funky, raw....No "over production" on this set, which allows Chaka to lead the way with her unique vocal talents.

"Beginnings" brings the Allman Brothers' two first LPs together on one CD, and it was originally put together by Atco as a double-LP to encourage new fans who'd missed them to buy the group's first two albums.
It proved so successful that it was kept in print on CD by Polydor when they acquired the group's catalog, but Polydor's single-CD version was substandard in audio quality, digitized from an LP production master, and their individual CDs of "The Allman Brothers Band" and "Idlewild South" were far superior. But when Capricorn got the library back in 1997, they remastered "Beginnings" along with the rest of the library, and the Capricorn version of this CD is one of the better bargains going, featuring several of the group's best songs.

In my opinion, no other artist could have come out with an album like this, because this album pretty much pushed every boundary, and broke every rule, and was such a stark contrast to her debut, to Christina this album was about coming out, and being herself instead of the `fake' & `forced' bubblegum pop star she was on the first album, although there is plenty of darkness on this album, it still speaks true of Christina, and she certainly doesn't hold anything back.

Strong Persuader

I have the first 6 or 7 albums (on vinyl) by Robert Cray and I believe this is the one to buy first. Possibly the best known songs are the title track and 'Smoking Gun' but really they're all great, especially the first five tracks. He can definitely play but it's the singing and the song writing which come to the fore.

Well worth buying for soul and blues fans alike.
