Back in the 80s James was the acceptable face of blues as far as the NME was concerned, operating as Howling Wilf and the Veejays. That outfit was much more Chicago Blues orientated. I still have some of the vinyl and its great. Over the years though he has tilted more towards classic soul. His last album , People Gonna Talk, really nailed it. Fabulous songwriting, vocals like Sam Cooke, guitar like Howling Wolf's sideman Hubert Sumlin, lush horn riffage reminiscent of early James Brown, slabs of funky hammond. It was a terrific record and I'm surprised it didn't make him a household name. This follow up has if anything even stronger songwriting. Really tight pop soul numbers. The band sounds similar, with perhaps the addition of more strings ... Read More:

If you like some classic soul eg Marvin, Curtis, Aretha, Al Green etc then this is an essential purchase. Also if you like the quality end of modern RnB like Alicia Keys or John Legend then this is also essential. There are no bad tracks here. 'Living For The City' is probably the greatest of Stevie's social commentaries. Alot of listeners today don't appreciate how amazing Stevie Wonder was in his prime, I'm too young to have heard him during the 70s and if I hadn't just trusted all the platitudes I probably would never have discovered him!. I just thought of Stevie Wonder as being the guy who did 'I just Called To Say I Love You' but that was the end of the creative period. He's not that visible these days and hopefully his first European tour in over ... Read More:

I've wanted this CD just off the strength of The Dells' "It's All Up to You", which is the most gorgeous song I've ever heard. Typically, this compilation is unavailable in the States, and I can't buy it off of UK iTunes (where I got to hear a sample of each song), so I'm just going to have to buy it here. As a Yank who loves her Northern Soul, I gotta say that the British are first class when it comes to championing and cherishing good music.

This certainly has to be one of my best albums of 2007. Believe me this ain't really the sort of music I listen to, especially coming from an Industrial/Neofolk/Ambiant background, however this album is a real exception in mainstream music, with some outstanding contributions from Timbaland, who I was introduced to from this album. Definatley 5 stars and a real misfit in my collection where it sits amongst the likes of Death in June and Throbbing Gristle.

I remember this album when I was very young in the 90s and I really, really loved this album although it was my dad's because he loves this album very much and I love those tune called..'Rimshot', 'On and On and 'Appletree'.
Now, this was a good album to listening to in summer time and for me to tidy up my place and relax.
A good beat and basslines. Erykah Badu is an amazing vocalist. I like her voice!

I was still quite young when the disco craze hit the world, certainly way too young to enjoy what was going on in nightclubs, not too young to enjoy the music though! My favourites at the time were undoubtedly this band. I recall dancing to all the hits at school disco's and once at a very magical evening trip to a local ice rink disco, with the youth club. But as well as stirring memories of the the late 70's and early 80's revisiting these tracks creates thoughts of just how stylisticly variable, vocally accomplished and downright excellent this band was! They deserved a lot more credit way back when and they do know. I defy you not to want to dance like crazy to "use it up" and "back to my roots" and I absolutley defy you to listen carefully to "native New Yorker" ... Read More:

Oh George, I do love you. This is a fabulous, fantastic, wonderful album. It is full of milestone music, things that relate to various stages in my life. There are so many tracks that have such relevance for me, A Different Corner, You have been Loved, Jesus to a Child, Father Figure, Somebody to Love, to name just a few! There are no disappointing tracks on this album, nothing that I don't like, just sheer quality, perfect music and vocals. I love One More Try, it moves me to tears, in fact, I love EVERYTHING. I think that George Michael is a true genius, a true performer, a true Magician. He can make music do so many things, make you laugh, make you dance, make you cry, make you sing. It's just perfect. Like George.

Blues in the album chart? Almost felt like a moral obligation to buy this. I can see that Simply Red fans will be confused and its not normal fare for blues fans but its mostly well done and there isn't a huge amount of truly modern blues that can cross over into wider tastes and if Mick doesn't sing as well as Bobby its still credit to him for bringing his hero to wider attention.
The dvd is interesting. Mick comes across as a bit of an arse but talks about this as his future musical direction so it will be interesting to see if that holds true.
Work in progress then.
