I really, really love this album. An amazing collection of ultimate covers, this album has a sound all it's own. Combining classic 80's drum machines and synths with soulful guitars and horns, it is the definitive electronic reggae album. While some believe this is against the simplicity of Reggae, combining the style with electronics takes nothing away from the purity of the reggae.

The album is spattered with highlights and classics. The horn/guitar solo in "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" is a moment of pure bliss. "The Way You Do The Things You Do" is perhaps the best example of TR-808 drum machines within a reggae constraint, the bass riff as pounding and groovy as if it were modern. I bought this in a rush and on the basis of the 2 previous glowing reviews. I've only recently started really exploring world music and am always looking for compilation albums that might offer new gems to follow up.

This album just doesn't do the job. Of the people I'd already heard of and styles of music I already knew about, the track selection turned out to be decidedly dodgy. And that really didn't give me much confidence in the rest of the choices. Overall I was completely underwhelmed. This seems to me to be a bland, hastily put together album that jumps on the world music bandwagon without much care or knowledge behind it.

Greatest Hits of the 80's

This is the best ever 80s collection, For the amount of songs you can get for about more or less 10 pounds, you get plenty of value for money. Combined together with the second volume, the collection becomes even better.
Some of the songs may not be familiar to UK listener as they may be predominantly American hit singles and vice versa. The only reason why I give this collection 4.5 stars is that it doesn't includes lyrics, liner notes or even chart positions but maybe that would be too much to ask for.However, I don't know why relax by FGTH is repeated in both collections which is a waste of money. Most of all, it would have been great to
include American artists signed to EMI affliated labels such as the Motels (Only The Lonely) to british ... Read More:

I've had this CD for a month or so, and it has taken a few listenings to realise how fantastic it is. I found it not as immediately accessible as Little Axe's earlier work at first, but now I think it is the best thing Skip McDonald has done so far. Part of that comes from his collaborators - check out in particular "Go Away Devil" - an extraordinary fusion of blues and dub with Junior Delgado; and "All In The Same Boat" - lyrics and singing by Chris Difford (of Squeeze, for those of you old enough to remember). Pure poetry.

So, music fans, give it a few listens before making a judgement.

I listen to a lot of metal/indie/punk buying in the region of 4 to 5 albums a week. I do find albums like this useful in that I decide if I like the tracks and if I do then I buy the album they are from. In this case I think this is an excellent compilation although not all of it can be classed as metal, certainly punk/rock/indie styles are included. I did alreday possess a number of the tracks but it was worth purchasing for the tracks I had not heard. If you are unfamiliar, or do not own any of the music on this album, then buy it, you will not be disappointed. The price of a compilation like this makes it worth purchasing.

Culture could have made a greatest Hits with at least 20 of their best songs. The collection of songs they have made is formidable. They have hits as far back as the 70's. This album should be much better! I am very disapointed. I have made a much better collection than this one!
