The palying is spectacular, the arrangements are little short of brilliant in places and the style appeals to many listeners.
There can't be much more to say about an album like this. The players are all Jazz musicians that's for sure, my only quibble is that Jazz solos sometimes do not fit over the given styles. Most of them work - Guy Barker, Kevin Robinson, Denys Baptiste and Andy Sheppard all accumulate their creativity in phrasing etc. for them. There are a couple of solos which I would perhaps think could have been slightly better organised or better thought out. 'Capitulo di Aleli' is one such example - the arrangement is conscientious enough, but the trumpet improvisation after the theme is in places rather iffy. I see this ... Read More:

This album can easily satisfy any reggae lover and unexpectedly grab hold onto non-reggae listeners into its clutches. Buju is masterful on the mic with his rough sounding style and the production is perfect. It's one of the Best reggae album I own that is constantly on rotation when I'm in the mood for this genre. Buju open the album with the brief a cappella psalm, "Shiloh," which is inspirational and extraordinary to hear. On the next two tracks he explodes with sound and feeling with first "Til I'm Laid to Rest," a melody that is intertwines with an homage to Africa and his faith in the Promised Land. He secondly roles in with one of the most powerful and rawest track "Murderer." It's emotionally written in the repercussion of his friend's killings ... Read More:

`Stereo-typical' expands on the previous Specials collection `Singles' by adding `A's, B's & Rarities'.
Disc one is the best disc of the set containing all of the singles of the original Specials from debut pot boiler `Gangsters' through to epoch number one band closer `Ghost Town'. I really, really love this album. An amazing collection of ultimate covers, this album has a sound all it's own. Combining classic 80's drum machines and synths with soulful guitars and horns, it is the definitive electronic reggae album. While some believe this is against the simplicity of Reggae, combining the style with electronics takes nothing away from the purity of the reggae.
The album is spattered with highlights and classics. The horn/guitar solo in "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" is a moment of pure bliss. "The Way You Do The Things You Do" is perhaps the best example of TR-808 drum machines within a reggae constraint, the bass riff as pounding and groovy as if it were modern. "Kingston Town" is a perfect slow song, full of a very simplistic emotion ... Read More:

Having been a keen to indulge in the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (Franti's previous band) in my youth, I baulked somewhat when he went semi-solo with Spearhead and dropped the electric, edgy, intelligent hip-hop for what seemed fairly lifeless soul on 'Home'. However a number of years later I decided it was time to return and listen to Franti as I had respect for his ideology and lyrics. I was not disappointed. This is a superb LP with a vast range of styles which serve to highlight this incredibly huge, humble and talented man. From the agression and guile of the title track to the uplifting west coast alternative rock of 'I know I'm not alone' - the cross-appeal of the music is laid out in full and the lyrics are as dangerous, thoughtful and mesmeric as ever. The only ... Read More:

I bought this because I was listening to various On-U-Sound acts for the best part of the late 80s, early 90s, and was not disappointed. There are some great tunes on here, mixed effortlessly, it seems, by Mr Sherwood. This album is a good buy if you are familiar with the label's prolific and varied output, or if you are simply looking for an introduction to the murky, thrilling world of On-U-Sound - Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Dub Syndicate, Gary Clail, African Head Charge et al. What are you waiting for? But it now!

Before reggae there was ska and rocksteady, indigenous musical forms that had evolved from the imported rhythm and blues and jazz styles prevalent in Jamaica from the fifties onwards. The Trojan Ska Box Set had gathered 50 representative tracks from the period up to 1966, including some very well known big sellers.
A number of the leading artists appear again on Vol. 2: Don Drummond, Lee Perry, Lord Tanamo, Baba Brooks, the Skatalites, Owen Gray, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook, Desmond Dekker, Justin Hinds and the Dominoes, the Maytals, Lyn Taitt and others, with well known and less well known examples of their art, including some appearing on CD for the first time.
Occasionally they appear to have been mastered from less than pristine vinyl copies but if this is ... Read More:
