This is the album REM had to make following the dull mid-tempo sludge of Around The Sun. It's a return to better form, and despite not being up there with the great earlier albums it's still an enjoyable 35 minute rush of classic REM. The opening 3 songs in particular pack a punch, and it's good to hear Peter Buck let loose again on uptempo stonkers like Living Well Is The Best Revenge and Horse To Water. Slower songs like Houston and Until The Day Is Done have an Automatic FTP feel to them (which is a good thing) and the closing glam thrash of I'm Gonna DJ sounds like Stipe was singing it after drinking too much Babycham (which is not such a good thing).

The National stand on the outer fringes of youth and with 'Boxer' create a woozy requiem for all that is lost in what Berenger calls "the unmagnificent lives of adults". Darker, denser, more soulful album than 'Alligator', 'Boxer' stands as a magnificent whole, drawing the listener into its soundscapes and its world painted in impressionistic word pictures. Berenger's narrator is always distant, disconnected from the lives he narrates, even when he's so obviously the subject, a distance sometimes enforced, sometimes self-induced, sometimes frankly voyeuristic. Oftentimes he sees what's happening but can't break in to change things to make the happy ending he so earnestly desires.
From the outset there's a strongly percussive sound to 'Boxer' ... Read More:

If you put Blondie, dub reggae, punk, new wave, disco, dancehall, electro, pop and ska in a blender and pressed the button, you'd come out with something approaching Santogold's debut. If that sounds horribly arty and pretentious, though, don't fear; this is also a brilliant pop album, topped off with buckets of Brooklyn cool courtesy of Santi's Ronettes-meets-Debbie Harry voice. There's great hooks aplenty and you'll be humming these songs all summer. Yeah, okay, it's so undoubtedly trendy I expect to hear it the next time I go in Topshop, but Santogold is so much more than your average NME-endorsed chancer and far far more than (as some have claimed) a weaker version of her pal M.I.A.- and if you don't know who that is, you ought to search for 'Kala' and ... 'The Red Album' is weezer's masterpiece so far. Don't let it fool you that the opener 'Troublemaker' is an archetype of the dynamic and melodic power rock known so well from earlier releases, 'cause what follows adds new and surprising dimensions to weezer's style. The second track 'The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations On A Shaker Hymn)' plays with the surprised but spoiled listener in its style variations based on the same rough yet harmonious theme and is, in my opinion, not only weezer's best composition ever, but no less than one of the most surprising, catchiest and simply... best rock songs released in years!
Yes, you read right: weezer goes from straight-forward melodic rock craftmanship to boasting out their musical talents in touching ... Read More:

The first two or three tracks are great - the album opens with some dark sounds of war and then launches straight into an amazing and powerful musical onslaught. After that however, the tracks rapidly become rather wishy-washy and samey - I struggled to listen to the album all the way through. By the time I reached the last two tracks I had lost interest completely.

This album has taken me by surprise. I didn't buy it for me but for the other half. Truth is though, many tracks have caught my ear and I've been playing it sneakily by myself too when no-one else is around, but don't tell her will you?!
You see, I wasn't really expecting an album displaying such a diverse range of electronic influence. Being a fan of Jarre and Kraftwerk, there is more than a nod and a wink to these classic artists here, as well as more contemporary influences such as Groove Armada and even The Streets.

a perfect mix of rock and acoustic, which is what they do best. yes, even better than colour and the shape in my opinion
Release Date May 12, 2008
I have only seen glimpses of the TV series, but no matter. This a wonderfully silly album combining very witty lyrics, with accurately observed pastiches of every genre of music.
The standout track initially is "It's partytime", in which a self-delusional "luvvaman" serenades his "wo'man". It's the last time I'll ever try to seduce my wife wearing just my black socks!
The other tracks bear repeated listening, and the joys of the wonderfully crafted lyrics are soon to be relished and enjoyed.
