Jeana Leslie and Siobhan Miller recently won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award - so, do they deserve it and merit our attention?
I was lucky enough to see them this weekend at Fairport's Cropredy Convention, and the answer to this question is a definite "yes". Musically, they're a fine mix of the modern and traditional, with some beautifully pure voices.
I was hesitant as to whether this album would deliver what I'd seen live, but I'm more than pleased to be able to report that it's well-produced and highly enjoyable.
So, welcome to the scene and let's hear some more soon!

Roddy Frame has released some excellent albums and singles over the years, but this little masterpiece may well be his career highlight - all the more amazing when you consider that he was only 19 when the album was released.
It still sounds great today - minor quibbles over some dated 1980s production touches aside - and heralded the arrival of one of the most literate and thoughtful songwriters of the post punk period. Frame's remarkable maturity and guitar virtuosity appear to best effect on the highlights - Oblivious, We Could Send Letters and, best of all, Walk Out to Winter - but the rest of the album suffers little in comparison.
A great purchase - and one you'll always want to dip into.

I think Red Book is quite a good album but LACKS the "oompph" of earlier hit-laden albums such as White on Blonde and The Hush. Still it's nice easy listening stuff and Sharleen Spiteri's voice is still beautiful. I would say that first time Texas listeners would be better off checking out some of their earlier work.

Well it would seem i'm the only one who prefers this album to the second one. I found out about this album thru the the first track being used in a comedians show i went to (Danny Kitson). Picked up the album and was a little dissapointed. However on further listens it's a really good effort. Goes off a bit at the end imo but most of the record is rather lovely. I'm not a fan of snow patrol and was pleasently surprised by the work on show.

The sleeve note claims this is a salsa album made by Scottish musicians who love Latin music and by South American musicians who love Scotland. It's a love affair to be encouraged. The rhythms will be familiar to all who have bought Santana's last couple of albums. The instruments include horns (sax, trumpets, trombone) guitar, fiddle, percussion, piano, accordion and, yes, bagpipes. Pipes have rarely sounded less military, or less highland. A reminder that pipes are international, not principally Scottish. They don't dominate here, but provide a texture that complements the horns. A fiddle, too, that reminds one more of Grapelli than Glasgow. This improbable mixture works. Music to dance to, and much more salsa than celtica. It isn't easy ... Read More:

Professional folk musicians keep saying that the album is so interesting because of the mixture of styles the album is presenting with as well as the new territory Martyn has entered. That is all true, and the album also is also very danceable, that is if you like a little bit of variation and improvisation in your movements.
But for me music, as with any art, is in the first place about what it tells me: As far as I am concerned this album is BURSTING with passion and the subtitle of GRIT could easily be: "Martyn's last second alive". I only occasionally dear to listen to this album, but when I do it is always inspiring!

You may not have heard the voice, but you will certainly have heard some Eric Bogle songs, without even being aware of who the man is. "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" ans "No Man's Land" are 2 of the greatest anti-war songs ever written, and have been covered countless times. To hear Eric singing them for himself, with real feeling and sorrow, is a pleasure. The haunting "Glasgow Lullaby" leaves you speechless. However, Eric's tremendous humour is also found in "He's Nobody's Moggy Now" (sorry cat lovers) and "Silly Slang Song". Even if you do not normally think about folk music, add this to your collection. A truly memorable album.
