of course this is a fantastic record. my only comment concerns the bonus track "aye my love". you hear the first verse twice and the second verse is missing! compare this with the original b-side of "lalena". donovan deserves a better treatment and it's the only reason i don't give this disc 5 stars! i hope someone from the record company reads this and puts the real version of "aye my love" on a renewed version of this cd!

Mara is my favourite Runrig album, and I own them all. I think what I love most about it is the seascape feel, something that echoes through every single song. You feel like you're either on the sea, by the shore, up on a cliff watching the waves... it's brilliantly done. I live by the coast so maybe that's why it appeals so much.
And yet it's more than that. The songs themselves are beautiful and when I listen to these I really miss Donnie Munro (although I also like Bruce Guthro - it's just Donnie sings these wonderfully). I think the best tracks are The Mighty Atlantic (a song I've loved since I was about 14 and now I'm 24!), The Dancing Floor and Lighthouse, but really they are all lovely and well worth hearing.

I read somewhere that once you enter your forties and begin to become a Grumpy Old Person you are much less likely to listen to new music. Since I am in my forties and not quite ready to be a GOP, I thought I would deliberately try something new, and I'm so glad I did because this is lovely! Karen Matheson's voice is gorgeous and evokes the wild beauty of her native Argyll. Most of the songs are in Gaelic and therefore utterly incomprehensible to me but in fact that's part of the charm because you really appreciate the human voice as an instrument.

This collection of colloborations between scottish writers and musicians really suprised me, the standard is very high with a varied collection of folk and alternative interpretations of writers poetry.
Tracks 1-13 almost run like a perfect album, the scottish accents blending in with some beautiful arrangements. The stand outs for me are the Malcolm Middleton and De Rosa tracks. One is all effects laden guitar and spoken dialogue, the other a loud, folky lament.
Dont forget the writers here too: Edwin Morgan,John Burnside,Alisdair Gray,Ian Rankin and many others deliver some fine lyrics. Rankin tells the tale of "the fifth stone" while Burnside supplies some dark and brooding material.

Without a doubt this is the greatest Live Rock band ever. Alex and the boys kept me sane during my teenage years in Glasgow. This recording shows them at their peak. It's a pity we have had to wait 28 years for it to be released. However this is one band that's music cannot be classified or shoved into a time frame. Listening to it now, it could have been recorded just last night. Missing from the track listing above is 'The Boston Tea Party', which is sandwiched between 'Vambo' and 'Dance to your Daddy'. 'Framed', which along with 'Faith Healer' were SAHB anthems, has on this recording got Alex playing Hitler. If you are offended then you havn't heard it. Alex was Sensational and the band still are.

The harmonies and lyrics of these songs are great. But too many of them sound alike. These guys are good. But this cd is a case of twins producing quads or quintuplets! It would be nice to hear them singing with someone else.

i am so into snow patrol at the moment. the first album of theirs that i bought was final straw a year or two ago after hearing the glorious run on the radio. after playing it to death i decided to give their back catalogue a go and bought songs for polar bears and when its all over we still have to clear up, and i loved them too. i was so excited about a new album coming out that i got it as soon as i could, and let me say i was not disappointed. from some really good rocky tracks like hands open to the truly beautiful set the fire to the third bar, this album has something for everyone and something to suit every mood. i've hardly listened to anything but snow patrol for about a year and i haven't tired of their music yet. although i have to say its not quite ... Originally released in 1967, Al was never happy with this album and somehow managed to get a remixed version with some track changes released in 1970 (the cover here is from that version). All the tracks from both versions, for better or worse, are included here and although this isn't a great album it's not without its charm - and some excellent tracks too! Highlights are 'Bed-sitter Images', Swiss Cottage Manoeuvres, The Carmichaels, Samuel Oh How You've Changed, Long Way Down From Stephanie, Bleeka Doodle Day and the two instrumentals 'Ivich' and the beautiful 'Denise at 16'. All of these were on both the 1967 and 1970 releases. 'Cliton in the Rain' from the re-issue is also a great song but Mike's Heron's Lover Man isn't Al's finest moment! As a bonus 'Go Your Way' from ... Read More:
