For the few(?) of us who happily enjoy both traditional Irish/Scottish/Asturian dance music and modern drum'n'bass, this album is something of a watershed. "Synthesised" diddley-eye is not a new phenomenon but I cannot recall anyone who has pushed both sides of the coin so far on the same recording. Purists may not appreciate the slight variations on old Irish and Scottish tunes but this album is "progressive" in the best possible sense of the word.

I'd been aware of the Humblebums for years but never heard any of their work before buying this album. I had heard both Connolly and Rafferty (who comes from my home town) individually and wondered what the combined effort would be like. In truth it's a bit of a mixed bag. Rafferty's superior songwriting talent is evident in songs such as I Can't Stop Now and Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway. Connelly holds his own with quality contributions such as the Give Me a Little of Your Time and the sing-along Saturday Round About Sunday. Connelly's comic songwriting comes across in Why Don't They Come Back to Dunoon and Little Blue Lady (which features the best comb and paper musicianship I've ever heard!) There is some filling out to stretch this ... Read More:

I first heard this album in my Dad's car on the way to Aberystwyth, a prospect that wasn't enthusing me a great deal of the time as my mother is an Al Stewart nut and a lot of his stuff I've heard to death, or the point by which I wish I was near it's sanctuary. But my prejudice aside, even though it's not my traditional music scene, I have to admire Al Stewart, and everything he has brought with his impressive array of musical history. Although most people may have only heard of the famous "Year Of The Cat," Al Stewart has written hundreds of brilliant songs which never achieved that same mainstream popularity and in my opinion are markedly superior even from the perspective of a casual fan. In particular I enjoy the haunting ballad of Nostradamus, ... Read More:

I've only given this one listen through so far, and I've loved every bit of it so far. First stand-out track was Tracy, and it was only after listening to the sublime Mogwai Fear Satan that I was able to understand the luke-warm reviews of Mr. Beast. This is in my opinion their very best album.

Without a doubt this is the greatest Live Rock band ever. Alex and the boys kept me sane during my teenage years in Glasgow. This recording shows them at their peak. It's a pity we have had to wait 28 years for it to be released. However this is one band that's music cannot be classified or shoved into a time frame. Listening to it now, it could have been recorded just last night. Missing from the track listing above is 'The Boston Tea Party', which is sandwiched between 'Vambo' and 'Dance to your Daddy'. 'Framed', which along with 'Faith Healer' were SAHB anthems, has on this recording got Alex playing Hitler. If you are offended then you havn't heard it. Alex was Sensational and the band still are.

Release Date May 14, 2007
There's not much that needs to be said, every tune is great, definately a contender for album of the year but has to compete with Klaxons - Myths of the near future so it won't be easy.
Buy it and you will never look back. I hope their next album will be as good if not better than this (that is quite a feat).

My girlfriend bought this for me as I had it on my Amazon wish list, placed there on spec, mainly on the basis it looked interesting given my current musical tastes. Wow, it really does knock your socks off. The pipes have a slightly rasping sound which becomes subdued once the trance-like percussion comes in, the combination of which is blissfully hypnotic. If you like your folk music with a modern dance twist many of the tracks on this album will suit, my friend described it as psychedelic folk, very apt.One minor criticism, tracks one and two are a bit similar. I can only imagine that this band live will be fantastic, buy it and be not dissapointed.Think Afro Celts and Shooglenifty with more energy-Love it!

Usually when I get a new album I just listen to the first song and then listen to the rest whenever I feel like it. To be perfectly honest, I was not that impressed at first. I had heard 'When We Were Wolves' before and I liked it a lot, but the first song sounded like quite a cocky and overdramatic song, but after a while it becomes apparent that this album is all about this kind of thing.
The album is basically a series a big folky instrumentals, with occasional vocals placed here and there, usually sounding like a whole choir, but, like the last reviewer said, this is an album for a room with closed door and closed curtains.
Comparisons with bands like Belle and Sebastian are inevitable, but hey, to be honest, a lot of these bands from Scotland ... Read More:
