The tenor voice of kenneth mckellar has alwasys amazed me for its scope, tone quality and also cute versatility. He seems so able to sing anything with such convictition yet complet sentiment and feeling, down to last detail. his range of song style is about as wide as it is posible to get; rather then a `fixed` style as so many singers seem to have.to put it another way, he sings the song the way it`s ment to be sung rather then to suit a style of singing that he choose. A perfect example is the LP. handel`s famous songs and arias: mckeller is the only singer that i have heard record handel`s-`ombra-mai-fu` with the introduction befor the largo also to sing `love in her eyes sits waiting` which is a master piece of singing and voice control. ... Malinky are in my view the best trad band around in Scotland presently.
I haven't seen them live, but intend to do so asap.
They manage to combine authenticity with modern arrangements, instruments and production.
Incidentally, 3 ravens is probably based on "the twa corbies", an even darker, earlier song recorded years ago by, among others, the Whistlebinkies. In the twa corbies, the knights maid doesn't pine away to death beside the corpse of her lover - she pees off "tae find anither mate". - Nae PC in those days!

Certainly a return to some sort of form after the string of lack luster albums from 1995 onwards! Again a shortfall of only 9 tracks, but there is no real weak tracks this time round. It's all about the music for me, and this it better sounding music with a lot less of the doggy sounds found on the awful Neon Lights or Cry. Track 2 and single Home sounds great even now, and secondly single Stranger is catchy. The only real weak moments of any note are the plodding re cooked Jeweller to the Stairs from Our Secrets are the Same, and the thudding keyboards of Different World, which can't make up which direction it wants to go in, but isn't a bad track all the same.

They still suffer from not having a variety of style's and a good strong 12 track ... Read More:

Professional folk musicians keep saying that the album is so interesting because of the mixture of styles the album is presenting with as well as the new territory Martyn has entered. That is all true, and the album also is also very danceable, that is if you like a little bit of variation and improvisation in your movements.

But for me music, as with any art, is in the first place about what it tells me: As far as I am concerned this album is BURSTING with passion and the subtitle of GRIT could easily be: "Martyn's last second alive". I only occasionally dear to listen to this album, but when I do it is always inspiring!

An Introduction to Capercaillie - Heart of the Highland

This album certainly is a fantastic introduction to Capercailie. It stretches across the whole spectrum of their musical styles from gaelic traditional folk to up beat tempos. This is an album for every type of occasion and mood indeed this is an album with something for everyone. I strongly recommend this album be it as an introduction to the band or else for the already loyal following to realiterate why this band is so great.

If its the last thing you do....buy it!!

There is an irony that Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis (The Cast) who are a rather modest couple are now getting the attention they deserve because their rendition of Auld Lang Syne, featured here, has been used in the Sex and the City Soundtrack. Mairi and Dave devote themselves to playing and supporting the music and traditional culture that they love

It is hard to think of a movies whose values could be further away from those of The Cast but I am so pleased that they are going to benefit from the exposure that the movie brings them.

This is lovingly crafted folk music with depth and soul, you will not regret buying this album so what are you waiting for?

Sentimental Me

I have seen Marti live in concert on the Sentimental Tour and it was such an enjoyable experience, different of course to Wet Wet Wet,he showed how truly talented he is, the voice was so smooth and honest. I have listened to the CD constantly,his interpretation of these very beautiful songs is unique, they give such an inner peace. He sings thenm from the heart

I came to this CD through hearing the breathtaking vocals of Karen Matheson firstly on Secret Garden (her voice on Green Waves STILL brings tears to my eyes) and then her solo albums, beginning with Time to Fall (perfection!). This collection features her voice ("touched by God" as Sean Connery so famously put it) but also includes the rest of the band's other wonderful, rousing music. Personally - I think it is worth the price just to hear the live version of Breisleach, but the entire anthology is a great way to introduce yourself to the music of this unique and multi-talented band of artists.

Well what can I say.. I've been a Proclaimers fan for a good few years now.. it was because of hearing "I'm On My Way" in the Shrek film that I decided to get the best of album.. and after hearing it, its clear the majority of the good tracks have come from this album.

Sunshine On Leith was a little underated as an album at the time but people have now sat up and paid attention thanks to the inclusion of the aforementioned "I'm On My Way" in the Shrek film to the inclusion of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" in the Benny and Joon film made back in the early 90's.

My favourites are the obvious: I'm Gonna Be and I'm On My Way but special mention should be made to Then I Met You.. the fast guitar playing and the tight band instrumentation make this track a ... Read More:
