There was never such a group as the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band - and Keynsham for me *is* this band. I never saw them; but for much of 1969 this was the soundtrack of summer in Alkmaar and Heiloo, Holland. From pure craziness as in the opening track, 'you done my brain in', to quiet ballads like 'quiet walks and summer talks'; to ethereal tunes like 'the odd boy' which halfway go into more mad territory ("sport, sport, masculine sport... equips a young man for society") - these are very disparate tracks. Yet still they form a coherent whole - up to and including 'busted' , that is. The last five are bonus tracks. But for me the old album is still pure magic, after all these years. Where else would you get (well, OK, maybe Captain Beefheart) lyric duets like ... Read More:

I'm listening to this for the first time and it's really hilarious. Richard cheese turns the most miserable songs into a joyus listen, haha, especially his cover of Creep by Radiohead.
I also love his small quotes in the middle of the songs also.

"Tadpoles" is probably the most accessible of the Bonzo's albums including some of their best known songs like the singalong "Hunting Tigers Out in Indiah" and children's favourite "Monster Mash", as well as their hit "Urban Spaceman". However this is to overlook the surprising depth displayed across many of their less celebrated compositions as demonstrated on this particular album by the delicate "By a Waterfall" and brilliant variations on traditional forms in "Dr Jazz" and "Laughing Blues". "Tadpoles" ends with lead singer Vivian Stanshall's rather apt "Canyons of Your Mind" resplendent with Elvis vocals and a guitar solo so terrible it is very funny.
So if you fancy something completely different, that the kids will love on long car journeys, and is ... Read More:

Although the comedy is a little uneven, this album contains some of the funniest material I have ever heard. Of course, the big selling point is the inclusion of The Chanukah Song; this live performance is great fun to listen to at any time of the year. Amazingly enough, it is not the funniest track on the album. That honor goes to Respect; it is the funniest comedy sketch I have ever heard in my life, and it actually gets funnier the more times I listen to it. A little boy describes his first day at school to his grandfather and his cronies at the social club. All they talk about is respect—you’ve got to respect the finger paint, you’ve got to respect the play dough, you’ve got to respect the milk, etc. Eventually, they start arguing among themselves ... My dad introduced me to the bonzo's mad world and i fell in love with it immediately. They are such wonderful musicians and yet they can make tracks that you would think were made by a year 7's music class in a bid to impress their friends. That is probably why i feel so attached to them. Only truly brilliant musicians could probably get away with such awful music! The guitar solo in the middle of "Mr Apollo" sounds like it was played by a five year old. But this doesnt detract anything from the song!
Some tracks on the CDs don't do anything for me, such as "Hello Mabel" but these are few and far between! The good stuff really outweighs the bad here, with songs ( i use this term advisedly) such as "Hunting tigers out in Indiah", "The Intro and Outro", "I'm the Urban Spaceman" ... Read More:
