There are few occasions these days where music will take your emotions to the depths of despair and up to the highest cloud and back before the album is finished. Mostly this happens in film soundtracks and Hannibal is easily one of the finest. There is humour, sadness, heart-pounding atmosphere and some pieces that will make your heart sing and sent your soul alight as the finest music does, and should.
The highlight of the album is Vide cor Meum by Patrick Cassidy - the album is worth buying for this alone. When I first watched the film I became determined to discover which great opera that piece was from, not realising that it was written specially for the film. Most musical recordings seem choppy mostly because they are, and are rendered from the stage play, so of course they wouldn't make that much sense. MY FAIR LADY holds up well and you don't get this sense. The entire ablum is a gem and there's not a sour note in it.

It's Just Not Cricket - Volumes 1 and 2

I'd been hearing great things about the 12th Man (a.k.a. Billy Birmingham) on the grapevine for some time, so decided to give this one a try; I wasn't disappointed.
Despite numerous expletives and innuendos (be warned this is really adult humour) this is one of the best comedy recordings I have heard for a long time. The spoof Asian cricketer names, constant niggle between the commentators, ridiculous scorelines and constant emphasis on Richie Benaud's pronunciation of the "s" and "t" (i.e. 222 for 2) are HILARIOUS, and the whole script is dotted with some razor-sharp one-liners.
If you're familiar with Australia's Channel Nine cricket commentary you may get more out of this, but in places (even to the uninitiated) this is a rip-snorter!

Eddie Izzard's Mr Kite is the odd one out here-its quite atrocious and doesn't need all the added on comedy

Leonard Cohen : I'm Your Man Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

I have been a fan of Leonard Cohen for nearly 40 years, having been introduced to his music by a fellow student at university.

I have most (possibly all)of his songs on various albums, but was still a bit hesitant about purchasing this album. I decided to listen to short (30 seconds) samples. After just hearing the first few (about four, I think it was), I immediately ordered the album.

There has has hardly been a day when it has not been played - and usually several times at that. My personal favourites are Antony's "If it be Your Will", and Martha Wainwright's "The Traitor". In fact, my least liked track (relatively speaking) is Leonard's only appearance on the album, joining Bono in "The Tower of Song".

Flashdance

The song Flashdance is of course part of musical history now, so of course you want it...is the album from which it came a gold-mine of similar hits...? Well, nearly.
There are some great songs here, in fact I'd buy the album alone for the two very strange tracks "He's A Dream" by Shandi and "Manhunt" by Karen Kamon" which are SOOOO 80's you just have to love them. Then there are two tracks by major artists (Donna Summer and Laura Branigan) that don't appear on any other album by them (as far as I know). Both pretty good, unusual productions.
The rest of the album is made up of drippy ballads and the WORST power-pop track you will ever hear - "Seduce Me Tonight" by Cycle V (who???). And I'm sorry, but even the celebrated track "Maniac" ... Read More:
