Whilst no recording will ever erase Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles,it has to be admitted that her sheer talent and personality did rather overwhelm the film version.
This "ensemble" recording rectifies that.
Maria Friedmann & Greg Edelmann in the lead bring a humanity and reality to their roles, something slightly lacking in the film. The MC is the marvellous Johnathan Pryce, who manages to convey jollity with an underlying sinister air.Add to this Fraulein Schneider sung by Judi Dench, who herself played Sally Bowles on the London stage in 1968.
This 2 CD set also includes music from the 1987 Broadway revival, and several tracks written for the film version, but not in the original stage show.
If you want a balanced, musical ... Read More:

If you think about it, a soundtrack ought really to reflect and enhance the tone and texture of a movie. It shouldn't be about taking songs of the moment from bands of the moment. Too often that seems to be the case, and the soundtrack album lacks any form of unity or cohesion. It is often the case that the songs on the album never even featured in the movie. But not in this case, oh no!
I don't think I have ever encountered a movie and soundtrack which are so inseparable. Somehow atmospheric and sentimental, while menacing and industrial at the same time, the soundtrack almost eclipses the movie. It certainly encapsulates it. It is impossible to watch the movie, without hearing the songs - and they really are a great bunch of songs!

As with previous releases on vinyl etc, this is NOT the original radio show. Episodes 1-4 sound like they have been re-recorded, from the voices and the technical sound I'm guessing this was done at the time of the third series. The script, the sound effects and music all contain differences - I've compared it to my original (very old) cassette recordings off the radio and the CD version is definitely different - cleaner maybe but somehow rather "flat".
Maybe the BBC lost the original recordings as they did with so many other radio and TV shows? Maybe the quality was thought to not be good enough? Maybe they thought they could improve the original sound effects with newer technology? Whatever the reason, claiming this as the original is not quite ... Read More:

I have to say that my preference would be for the "Original London Cast" recording which is sadly no longer available to the Film Soundtrack version. Although the 'London Cast' album is only a single album and therefore only contains half the songs, the instrumentation seems crisper and tighter and generally speaking, the vocal performances are better. The lovely Dana Gillespie as Mary Magdalene is unbeatable and even Paul Nicholas (yes, he also featured in the original stage recording) puts in a fairly good performance too, though admittedly probably tries a bit too hard to put on a theatrical voice. If you know anybody who has a copy of the original 1972 album (and providing they still have a turntable), listen to "Trial Before Pilate" and compare it to the film ... Read More:

Welsh actor Richard Burton had one of the greatest voices ever captured on record. Dylan Thomas was one of the finest poets ever to emerge from Wales. Put them together and you have one of the most joyously beautiful recordings you can hope for. Burton was always a wonderful reciter of poetry, and his readings of 15 of Dylan's poems on this CD are amongst his very best work. He reads them with passion, wit, love and reverence. His reading of 'Fern Hill' is my personal favourite, but all of them are wonderful.
The CD also includes two of Thomas's short stories, read by Hugh Griffiths and Emlyn Williams. I cannot recommend this recording highly enough.

This is the revived version of the classic 'Oliver' musical that was based on 'Oliver Twist' by Dickens. It is a triumph! I absolutely love it! With music that lifts you up and stirs the emotions. We are invited to follow Oliver, a small timid orphan, on his journey in search of love. Along the way we meet such wonderful characters as Fagan (played by Jonathan Price), the artful dodger, Nancy(played by Sally Dexter) and the terrifying Bill Sykes (played by the wonderful Miles Anderson). It is truley a heart warming story that is told so beautifully as only music could! It is like one of those films that you can watch over and over again - each time you listn to it you find something new and wonderful! Don't let faffy school productions put you off such a beautiful musical! ... Read More:

My husband is a driving instructor so I felt this CD was a "must have" gift for him.
We are both were familiar with Bob Newhart's brilliantly funny sketches from years back - once hard - never forgotten. It's not only what he puts into his sketches that are so funny, as what he leaves out, with well timed pauses skillfully setting the scene in the listener's imagination.
The Driving Instructor is a pure classic - I defy anyone not to laugh have until they have tears rolling down their cheeks. The Grace L Ferguson Airline (and Storm Door co) is brilliantly funny also, as is the Retirement Party and the Bus Drivers' School.
This is wonderfully funny humour which still works today and very cleverly constructed leaving so much to the imagination. ... Read More:

I'd been hearing great things about the 12th Man (a.k.a. Billy Birmingham) on the grapevine for some time, so decided to give this one a try; I wasn't disappointed.
Despite numerous expletives and innuendos (be warned this is really adult humour) this is one of the best comedy recordings I have heard for a long time. The spoof Asian cricketer names, constant niggle between the commentators, ridiculous scorelines and constant emphasis on Richie Benaud's pronunciation of the "s" and "t" (i.e. 222 for 2) are HILARIOUS, and the whole script is dotted with some razor-sharp one-liners.
If you're familiar with Australia's Channel Nine cricket commentary you may get more out of this, but in places (even to the uninitiated) this is a rip-snorter!

Excellent compilation of Craig Armstrongs film music. Armstrong truly is a rare talent in film music scoring - these days, each composer whose name you might recognise has their own tricks that crop up time and again. Hans Zimmer has the 'soulful voice as instrument and Wagnerian epic themes', Jerry Goldsmith has the 'lush string sound with simple effective meolodies', Vangelis has the epic soaring themes market cornered... But Craig Armstrong truly uses a large repertoire of tools to achieve whatever is needed for a certain film. This album contains romantic soft melodies gently played (Love Actually Glasgow Love theme), Driving modern dance style beats ('Ball' from Plunckett and Maclean), epic Carl Orff style choir and orchestra theatrics - (Romeo and ... First, I didn't know who was David Bowie and what kind of tracks has he got. But, when both of my cousins and my sister singed it every time and my sister got a David Bowie CD, I listened to it. It was... wonderful. Now I know why are they collecting lyrics, pictures and CD-s from David Bowie & Trevor Jones. I only dislike Chilly Down and Within you, but my favourite tracks are Home at Last, Thirteen O'Clock and Underground; but I also like Hallucination, As the World Falls Down and Magic Dance tracks. The matter is just that I couldn't see the film yet but I DEMAND IT!
