The Platinum Collection

CD-Charts > Music > Southern Soul
by: Carla Thomas

Release Date March 19, 2007
Carla Thomas's solo career was always slightly overshaddowed by the success of her brilliant work with Otos Redding on "King & Queen" (which I saved up for weeks to buy in 67 when I was 15!!)but she is a real star in her own right. However some of her albums didn't do her justice. This collection pulls together lots of her best work from the 60s that still sound good today. the obvious hits are here - "No time to lose" "Comfort me" and the immaculate "Baby" are real gems. But there's lots of other great stuff with dirfferent styles. I love "Stop, look what youre doing" & a "Womans love". Not really a weak track in sight. If I was being picky I would have put on "New years resolution" from King & Queen , rather than "Lovey Dovey" ... Read More:

I Got to Try It One Time

CD-Charts > Music > Southern Soul
by: Millie Jackson

Release Date February 26, 1990
I Got To Try It One Time is just one of a string of brilliant albums that Millie recorded in the early 1970s. This album lacks the comedic interludes that make her later works so distinctive, but for down and dirty funk, this album is a goldmine.

The album kicks off with one of Millie's best ballads, the soulful "How Do You Feel The Morning After". After singing so movingly about being a wronged woman, Millie switches roles for "I Got To Try It One Time". In this song, Millie is a woman who just can't resist one of her man's friends. Millie has a knack for singing about love and all its associated dramas with a candour that would make most of today's divas blush with embarrassment. Another perfect example of this is "Get Your Love ... Read More:

Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul

CD-Charts > Music > Southern Soul

Release Date
HISTORY:
With the groundwork of his first two albums behind him, "Pain In My Heart" in 1964 and "The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads" in early 1965, Otis Redding stepped into the Stax recording studio on McLemore Avenue in Memphis on the 9th of July 1965 to quickly slap down his 3rd album. And quick was the optional word. In one long adrenalin fuelled session (broken up by night gigs the band had to attend - only to reconvene in the early hours of the morning), its 11 songs took less than 24 hours to produce. In fact, Otis flew out of Memphis the very next day to do another gig! It is of course now recongnised as a bona-fide 60ts soul classic and this "Collector's Edition" is here to celebrate that.

Make Do With What You Got

CD-Charts > Music > Southern Soul
by: Solomon Burke

Release Date February 28, 2005
This is a really hard one. On the one hand it doesn't come anywhere near as close to 2002's Don't Give Up On Me, but on the other hand, how can you expect to?

It is extremely well produced and engineered, with wonderful musicianship, great vocals and good material, but something is definitely missing. It doesn't grab me at all. A few of the tracks stick out and shine, but is that just by comparison to the rest?

I just got the feeling that Sony (was it?) saw the sucess of the previous CD, dragged him into a top studio, with top musicians and a top producer and threw the baby out with the bath water. Corporate creativity at its mediocre best.

Oh No Not My Baby: The Best Of Maxine Brown

CD-Charts > Music > Southern Soul
by: Maxine Brown

Release Date October 01, 1990
There were actually 2 Maxine Browns-the other was one of the Browns who began as Jim Ed & Maxine in 1953.Amazon are adverising her book.
The first single issued in the U K of her namesake was All in my mind-which had made the U S Top 40.She next made about 8 singles for ABC Paramount which all flopped and were purchased by Wand for what became the first album.
Suffering here in the rather inappropriate cover of Oh no not my baby-which charted for Manfred Mann-was an example of a cover version which was not their image and rather pointless.Apparantly the song had first been made by the Shirelles but never released
She sounds not unlike Carole King at times and "Oh no not my baby" was covered later by her on the Pearls album.Goffin ... Read More:
