I love all of Aretha's music, yet I am particular to her more energetic tunes, which is why I bought this live album. Well, my expectations were most certainly fulfilled: Aretha In Paris is chock-full of songs that'll make me jump up from wherever I am and start dancing whenever I play them. My favourites are the opening track, "Baby, I love you", "Since you've been gone" and, of course, "Respect". The best of the lot, however, is the orgiastic "Come Back Baby", which just has to heard to be believed. Another one of my favourites is the beautiful rendition of Willie Nelson's "Night Life", a lacerating yet unapologetic account of a life gone astray. Aretha's unmatched ability to act out her songs is well displayed in "Dr. Feelgood" (a song which ... Read More:

If Fats Domino carried New Orleans through the 50s then it was Allen Toussaint in the next 2 decades.Today he's on tour with Elvis Costello who he cut his last album with a mighty long way down the road from the days of Ernie K-Doe and the Stokes and the times he stood in for Fats Domino on a new single because he was on the road and which was the start of his recording career when he had to learn how to impersonate the Fat Man

This really is soul at its best, and should have been the 4th volume of Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures. Many of the tracks are wilfully obscure-despite years of ardent reseach I had never heard of Lee Jackson, Walter Rhodes or Rudy Mockabee. Others tracks feature better known artists on lesser known tracks - the wonderful, criminally underrated Soul Brothers 6, the sweet and sensual Judy Clay, the anguished and torured Sam Dees, the wild wicked Wilson Pickett, and, most poignant of them all, the sad and wasted James Carr. There are beautifulcovers of acknowledged classics - Jackie Moore on Percy Sledge, Judy Clay on Lee Dorsey - and soulful takes on lesser genres - JP Robinson's outraged tribute to the executed George Jackson brings passion and pain ... This was the last album by the classic lineup of Booker T and the MG's: Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn and Al Jackson. The merely curious might be expecting that the band chiefly famous for 'Green Onions' and for the music to the BBC's cricket coverage would be one-hit wonders, who can't sustain interest over the course of a whole album. After all, what we are talking about here are instrumental tracks by the Stax Records house band, a combo that specialised in backing singers like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. In fact, the band is a lot better than merely listenable. Walk down the street with this on your earphones and you can feel like the star of your own personal blaxploitation movie.
