As with the original 'Leaders Not Followers' EP this release is comprised entirely of cover songs, as Napalm Death take a trawl through the 80's bands that inspired them. The material is about an equal mix of hardcore punk bands and very early death metal bands ranging from such famous names as Sepultura and Agnostic Front to more obscure artists. Inevitably most of these songs are a lot more simplistic than Napalm's own output, but their primitive raw power gives them their own charm, and Napalm themselves blast through the material in typically mayhemic fashion. The CD sleeve contains some helpful and occasionally amusing liner notes on the history behind these songs, and the disc contains a CD-ROM extra live video performance of 'Low Life'.

Classic riff tastic Kreator fodder. There's some properly heavy stuff going on in this album, serious riffing, and by god Mille's voice even sounds great. Violent Revolution was a lovely little tempter, giving us the hope that Kreator were returning to Coma/Extreme days. Well here it is my heavy metal hamsters, back to the glory days.
There are some very melodic pieces in this album, but it just enhances the heaviness. Murder Fantasies is not one of my wife's favourite songs....we were lying in a hotel room in Amsterdam late at night, I was listening to this on my headphones, and all my wife could hear in the darkness was the constant mantra, "I want to kill you, I want to kill you, I want to kill you."
It took her a while to see the funny ... Read More:

Carcass started out as a slightly sloppy but ground-breakingly extreme goregrind band, and ended up a neutered whimpish version of their old selves, but between those extremes they produced some of the best extreme metal ever made. This worthy compilation is stuffed with non-album obscurities from all eras of the band, chronologically:
1989 - ‘Exhume to Consume’ is taken from the original Grindcrusher compilation album, and is almost identical to the version from Symphonies of Sickness, just with the addition of a spooky feedback intro. From the Pathological compilation album comes ‘Genital Grinder II’, a superior recording of the opener from their debut album, and the frankly brilliant epic ‘Hepatic Tissue Grinder’, ... Read More:

This might have been a surprise to most in 1994 due to the previous albums progressively becoming more epic and slower. I was marginally disappointed at the time because I felt Quorthon had already accomplished what he needed in this area but the fact is there is some very good and powerful material on here. The guitar work is good but in my opinion what let the album down was the drum sound, which appears artificial and doesn't blend with the general sound. The other thing against the album is that some of this material could have been developed further to create something more than just hard thrash, for example there was plenty of speed and power on Blood Fire Death but the songs often went through tempo changes and various evolutionary phases, making the album as a whole much ... It has to be tough for slayer. This is the band who defined what a certain brand of metal sounded like, even what it could sound like. Reign in Blood was the record I wanted to hear in 1986. It was the yard stick by which I measured not just metal, but all extreme/noise music. I spent years trying to find another record that would give me that same hit. Now here is that record.
Nothing inbetween has offered that same visceral brutality. Like Reign in Blood this is an album that takes my breath away, I find myself listening to a track, then replaying it, just to relive the sensation. It somehow leaves me feeling clean, in the same way that you feel purged after a fist fight, not clever, but in touch with something elemental.
Maybe the involvement of Rick Rubin in Production has ... Read More:
