These are my most-listened-to guitar solos. All his albums are good, and all have memorable moments but, like most blues guitarists, his guitar-playing is much better than his singing and his songs; here he does what he does best, and there are no better examples of it ( though most of his 3 tracks on the Montreux festival album, with Chico Hamilton and Little Milton, are on a par - note: that's a different album from Albert's own 'Blues at Sunrise:live at Montreux', which is also essential). This is a pleasure from start to finish; far from finding my mind wandering and wishing for a catchier tune, every note of this hypnotises me. This is a master-class in not only blues guitar, but in the essence of music; every phrase seems part of every ... Read More:

There are no fewer than three albums by Albert King titled "I'll Play The Blues For You" - a 1999 album which also includes some sides by John Lee Hooker, a 1977 live recording, and this one, which is the original, or at least the first.
Released on Stax in 1972, "I'll Play The Blues For You" doesn't quit match his magnificent second LP, "Born Under A Bad Sign", but it stands head and shoulders above most electric blues records of the 70s, even if it lacks the raw, gritty power of men like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Albert King's soulful vocals are supremely smooth and confident all the way through, and this album includes some of his best recordings of the 70s, "I'll Play The Blues For You", "High Cost Of Loving", and "Little Brother (Make ... This late album by the great Stax Records house band is a fine addition to their majestic catalogue. English listeners will note the title track from its use for many years as the theme music to BBC cricket coverage (it's odd how you expect the original version to fade away after thirty seconds). But there are other gems here: there's a remarkably soulful and jazzy version of 'Willow Weep For Me', with Jones on acoustic piano; the great 'Hang 'Em High', whose mixture of R&B and cowboy music was hugely influential on the Jamaican dub scene; a cool version of Hendrix's 'Foxy Lady', bringing Jimi back into the soul music camp; and a fascinatingly menacing version of 'Eleanor Rigby', full of ominous flattened fifths, the most successful cover I've heard of a song ... ......came Isaac Hayes. A four track album ? In 1969 ? You've got to be kidding, right ? No Sir. Isaac Hayes took the orchestration and elongation of soul music to the nth degree with this ground-breaking release. Whether or not you find the four abnormally-extended workouts to your own personal taste or not, you simply have to admire the artist's willingness to push back the boundaries of contemporary popular music and the sheer chutzpah of it all.
The opener, "Walk On By" is a magnificent interpretation of the track made famous by Dionne Warwick in anyone's book. Lushly and lasciviously orchestrated it has so many peaks it leaves you breathless, despite its essential laid back groove. The contender for the longest track name ever is next, and a wonderful ...
