To Be Continued was Isaac Haeys' third album, and the last before he changed his co-arranger. In style it sits alongside "Hot buttered Soul" and the "Isaac Hayes Movement", and to me is the most sophisticated of his early works. Hayes' rendition of Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love" is a teriffic mix of orchestra, jazz and rhythm sounds that stretches the original song out to something like 12 minutes. Right after this, comes a 15 minute plus combination of the Hayes penned "Ike's Mood" and "You've lost that Lovin' Feeling" - another mammoth track featuring the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. The other tracks are less inspiring, but still worthy. If I could only own one Isaac Hayes CD, I'd make it this one.

My dad was a big fan of Isaac Hayes and indeed a lot of the other Stax artists, as a result, I grew up listening to a lot of music from the Stax label.

So far as Isaac Hayes is concerned and film soundtracks, this really is worth buying. Isaac Hayes shows the depth of his creativity by producing an original soundtrack that has everything in it...vocals, instrumentals, lots of strings, horns, excellant rhythym section etc.etc.

Most people will be aware of the 1st track 'The Theme from Shaft' but all the others are great as well. My particular faves include 'Soulsville', 'No Name Bar' and 'Bumpy's Lament' which specifically has been sampled/copied by numerous other rnb and rap artists.

Sorry, but i'm going to be a bit harsh in my judgment for this one. (I'm torn between a three and a four star rating.) Even though i have this DOUBLE cd compilation, and wouldn't dream of off-loading it, there's something a bit disappointing with the track selections. It's not too much of a problem, for me, because it complements my "Can You Dig It?" deluxe double rather well. I'm unsure, however, if this is THE best one-stop compilation available, in spite of the content being perfectly okay. Another slight disappointment is the total running time of just over two hours. Once again, there was room for a whole lot more!

This documentary premiered on US TV this summer (07) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the label which rode the wave that was Soul, the soundtrack to the struggle for Civil Rights. From it's beginnings in a old cinema on McLemore Avenue in Memphis, through it's golden era(s), the story of Stax is the story of the rise and fall of Soul as the dominant musical genre, to the point where disco took over.

The influence exerted by Soul though is still felt today, and the music has never been allowed to die by those who love it. In 2007 the label has been reborn, with re-releases and new material, and the 50th anniversary is a great excuse for this documentary, to celebrate the part the music played in influencing change in the 60's and 70's

This late album by the great Stax Records house band is a fine addition to their majestic catalogue. English listeners will note the title track from its use for many years as the theme music to BBC cricket coverage (it's odd how you expect the original version to fade away after thirty seconds). But there are other gems here: there's a remarkably soulful and jazzy version of 'Willow Weep For Me', with Jones on acoustic piano; the great 'Hang 'Em High', whose mixture of R&B and cowboy music was hugely influential on the Jamaican dub scene; a cool version of Hendrix's 'Foxy Lady', bringing Jimi back into the soul music camp; and a fascinatingly menacing version of 'Eleanor Rigby', full of ominous flattened fifths, the most successful cover I've heard of a song that you mess with ...
