I absolutely love this, its everything i want from a funk album. As with most Stax albums the tracks have been well sequenced and the vocals are contrasting, unusual and inspiring. As well as some deep funk classics here there is a selection of seriously cheesey soul/ funk chucked in the thick of it, i guess its this that makes the album enjoyable and unusual. I had this album when i was a kid back in the eighties and it was played endlessly then as it is now. There are few albums i can hold in this regard, i recommmend it and its worth paying for. Another good one is Stax O Soul which is a great collection of Soul/ Funk and i never tire of that either.

I think of this as an Isaac Hayes fights back at Barry White album. Aside from the film soundtracks, Hayes was mostly covering other people’s material at the time. Then along came Barry White who wrote virtually everything he sang. And so, hot on the heels of White’s cracking ‘I’ve Got So Much To Give’ album, we have Joy.

This is a good album, with a truly great opening track. The orchestration on Joy is simply wonderful. Pounding rhythm, hard hitting brass and strings that feel like a more accomplished version of what Hayes did on Walk On By on the Hot Buttered Soul album. And if you like long tracks, this one goes on for a good 15 minutes (although the song is pretty much finished after the first eight ... Read More:
