by: Booker T & The Mg's

Release Date
This was the last album by the classic lineup of Booker T and the MG's: Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn and Al Jackson. The merely curious might be expecting that the band chiefly famous for 'Green Onions' and for the music to the BBC's cricket coverage would be one-hit wonders, who can't sustain interest over the course of a whole album. After all, what we are talking about here are instrumental tracks by the Stax Records house band, a combo that specialised in backing singers like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. In fact, the band is a lot better than merely listenable. Walk down the street with this on your earphones and you can feel like the star of your own personal blaxploitation movie.

The Isaac Hayes Movement

by: Isaac Hayes

Release Date October 01, 2001
I wouldn't say that this is THE best Isaac Hayes album of all time, but it's definitely grown on me more recently. "Hot Buttered Soul", "To Be Continued" and "Black Moses" are all more impressive, in my opinion, without any doubt.

However, this is another top-quality recording from the maverick soulman. Only four tracks, like the "HBS" which preceded it. Things kick off with the rapped intro to his great rendition of "I Stand Accused". Then comes "One Big Unhappy Family", which is a decent track. But hardly, i'd say, one of Isaac Hayes' best. Much better is the interpretation of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself". Just about all his readings of Bacharach & David songs are fabulous, even though the songwriters must have been a bit non ... Read More:

Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth [VINYL]

by: 24-Carat Black

Release Date September 27, 1999
This has to be one of the best albums I've ever listened to, and to me it is the most soulful album ever. One of the things that makes this album so good is the way it flows together, it really makes a difference if you listen to the album from start to finish and you definitely should. The socially conscious subject matter of this album, detailing the crisis of the american slums in the 60's and 70's, which is often conveyed in spoken word rather than singing, creates an amazing atmosphere that I've never found on another album yet.

These are my most-listened-to guitar solos. All his albums are good, and all have memorable moments but, like most blues guitarists, his guitar-playing is much better than his singing and his songs; here he does what he does best, and there are no better examples of it ( though most of his 3 tracks on the Montreux festival album, with Chico Hamilton and Little Milton, are on a par - note: that's a different album from Albert's own 'Blues at Sunrise:live at Montreux', which is also essential). This is a pleasure from start to finish; far from finding my mind wandering and wishing for a catchier tune, every note of this hypnotises me. This is a master-class in not only blues guitar, but in the essence of music; every phrase seems part of every other phrase, ... Read More:
