Good God almighty! If you have any affinity for any kind of music, buy this album! The effect this astonishing collection of singles had is still felt more than forty years after its initial release. The songs are simply stunning, and Bland's voice is truly phenomenal. Any singer who ever belted out a single note OWES Bobby "Blue" Bland. For those who have heard nothing but the man's latter day work with Malaco, this is nothing short of a revelation. This was one of the most amazing voices on God's green earth. He's somehow like a cross between Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, and Brook Benton, but with the strength of all three combined. Listening to this will make you realize how right B.B. King was when he said, "Me and Little Milton, we did alright, ... Read More:

This really is two separate live albums packaged together. Both are excellent in their own right and would represent a great introduction to SRV for people who don't like to start with a "Best of" cd that becomes redundant once you've decided you like them and have bought up all their back catalogue. Anyone want my Led Zep Remasters?
Anyway, it's two separate concerts at Montreux. The first one is strangely greeted with boos from the crowd, who were presumably expecting HearSay some 21 years before they formed. The second is much better received.
In both concerts, SRV's guitar has an Albert King style twang to it, which gets me every time. His fingers seem to move pretty fast too although, unlike Buddy Guy, his brain is always ... Read More:

In my humble opinion, easily the best soul/blues album you are likely to hear. Great songs, great voice, musicians are top notch.Bobby Bland at his best !!!!
Release Date January 08, 2001
Bobby Blue Bland is rightly accalaimed as one of the greatest ever blues singers and this album clearly demonstrates why. If you are only going to purchase one album by Bobby Bland then I urge you to buy this one. All the songs are great with superb vocal range. My favourite is his version of "Stormy Monday Blues" which I put in the same category as the T Bone Walker version. Brilliant!

Reading a book on the blues, I came across Johnny Winter, who is regarded as one of the greatest slide guitar players that has ever lived. Never having heard him before, I bought a copy of this CD on the strength of that comment. Awesome is the best word to describe Johnny's playing, whether on electric or acoustic guitar, and this album shows him at his best. I cant even begin to dream of being able to play guitar like he does on "Dallas", an awesome example of slide on his steel National. How many fingers does this man have? Vocals is not Johnny's strongest suit, and may be an acquired taste, but his guitar playing outweighs this flaw. Being first released in the late 60s on vinyl, the only down side is the comparatively short playing time (45 mins or ... Read More:

Where to start on the album...well it has to be Little Wing...the sleeve notes by Jimmie Vaughan state that with headphones on you can hear his amp buzzing and almost smell the pipes burning...and indeed you can, very rarely is anything this good!...add to this stevie's own redition of the title track, though the best version of this is to found on Martin Scorsese's Stevie collection. (a blistering live version).
This album was released just after Vaughan's death and is very possibly his best (studio) album.
What would he have been like if he had lived!?!?

It's very difficult to play the blues now without sounding tired and old hat, but the Fabulous Thunderbirds, especially on this and their second album manage to avoid cliche. They have an authenticity to their sound that is raw, primitive and greasy. Jimmy Vaughan plays the guitar with huge amounts of space, so far behind the beat that he sometimes sounds as if he's never going to hit the note. Its a style that's almost the opposite of the pyrotechnics of his more famous brother, Stevie Ray. For a bunch of white boys playing the blues they don't have sound black. They "ain't nuthin but fine, fine, fine!"
