This is one of my all-time favourite albums, of any kind. It is constantly surprising, even after many listens, using "Songs of the Spanish Civil War" to address the most contemporary of problems, especially the constant struggle between individuals and authoritarian regimes, of any kind. In an ideal world this would have been the soundtrack to one of my favourite films - Ken Loach's "Land and Freedom", but it came along a few years too late. Not too worry - it reinforces the message. As far as the music is concerned, Lopez provides percussive power and subtlety while the other musicians, including the vocalist on some tracks, weave mostly bass-heavy patterns around the melodies, many of which are familiar from such albums as Charlie Haden's ... I am the hugest fan of the film 'Zulu' and so instantly bought this OSD when I saw it. I was so disappointed when I saw all the rubbish that they had added on to the rest of the CD. After listening to all tracks on both CDs I decided that the album could easily be only 7 tracks long. The rest are from other films!! I gave this OSD 4 Stars because the 7 tracks that are good are infact great! Extremely powerful, brilliantly played and just bring back all the memories of the film. It didn't get 5 stars simply because of all the other rubbish. Definitely worth buying for any fan of the film.
