When reading the sleeve notes and it claims that 'this album will change your life' or the like, you'd expect to raise an eyebrow! But, it truly is superb; touching on subject matters way ahead of it's time, hard hitting lyrics and a real individualism you'd wouldn't expect from mainstream Nashville. Essentially, this CD is filled with the "darker" material of this '70s output - an idea that should be applied to a lot of aritists - and the result is riveting. A must for those interested in "true" country music.

Sings Ballads of the True West

I had these ballads when they were originally released on vinyl LP's and it's good to have them on CD. Wheras JC explored a different storytelling landscape to that, say, of Marty Robbins (I wish JC had covered a few MR songs), this is still a good collection of both traditional and modern songs about life in the early days of America.

JC's voice is strong and fits well with the darkness of many of the songs. Despite his undoubted abilities as a writer of both good tunes and lyrics, it's very good to hear him sing so many songs from other sources and to fit them into the context of what was to later become known as a 'concept' album.

This is not a greatest hits collection although it does contain the two songs that Slim is most readily identified with, Rose Marie and Happy anniversary. Indian love call, China doll, I'll take you home again Kathleen and Love song of the waterfall are other favorites among Slim's fans that are included.

Most of the songs here are covers, but Slim's unique voice ensures that they are fresh and distinctive. Here’s 20 genuine traditional country music songs, most of them classics of the genre. Dolly and Porter’s voices blend perfectly to ensure some of the greatest duets ever in any form of popular music. There are wonderful weepies like Just Someone I Used To Know, uptempo numbers like Better Move It On Home and a great cover of The Last Thing On My Mind. Other favourites of mine are If Teardrops Were Pennies, Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man with its lovely chorus, Lost Forever In Your Kiss and the moving Yours Love. Parton and Wagoner certainly had the perfect combination – they created ageless music that is so much better and emotionally compelling than most of what goes for modern country music.

A fantastic album, a collection of sad, heartfelt ballads, catchy little numbers and a duet with Willie Nelson.
As always Dolly's vocals are beautiful and great.

Truely a pop masterpiece, catchy 80's style songs and a duet with the one and only Kenny Rogers.

I would like to pick up on a point made by a previous reviewer about this album. Firstly I disagree strongly Elvis' period at Sun Records was his best, heck he only made 6 singles with the label. The majority of the tracks on this set are much finer.

Furthermore, the reason their are no Sun singles here is because an album of this kind is meant to capture hit's, not early obscurities, not rarity's, not the b-side you liked to a number 1 single, not those album cuts that never got out as singles.

Now some acts Greatest Hit's do do that (reason: They didn't have enough hit's). There are plenty of Presley compilations of Sun Material. So, if you want the sun stuff, you can get one of those. If you want the hit's, they you buy an album ... Read More:
