This is a masterpiece, this is how records should be done, crisp sounds, a great and passionate voice, an intensity that is difficult to see in other records. I think this is his best performance ever, too bad he was not there to listen to it. His version of "Further up on the road" is just unbelievable, I think Springsteen might have cried when he listened to it. Similarly "four strong winds" is really good and better, for example, than Neil Young's version on Comes a Time.
A record that will make you cry, with passion and soul. I don't give 5 stars easily but this is just too good.

I always had a problem with Country as a youngster, growing up as I did in a working class English town and hooked on Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Sabbath. Though I could listen to Johnny Cash, some of the female country stars of the time (Tammy Wynette etc) really grated on me.

I bought this collection on a whim while working out in California a couple of years ago. This was the first time I really listened to her as a recording artist in her own right, though I was familiar with her work with Gram Parsons and her excellent backing vocals on Dylan's Desire.

Not being an expert on country music or on Johnny Cash, I must say this album is moving and very very suggestive; with simple but clever arrangements, beautiful songs and amazing vocal...

Obviously more than merely touched by age and various ailments, mr. Johnny Cash performes with great passion and suggests wisdom no young singer can convey (or even come close to conveying)...

I like it very much!

We have loved John Denver's music since we were kids. Hearing them in this CD shows us that he was the BEST. We have so many memories of the different things the songs meant to us, he gave us a lot of happiness. We will always play his music & we know it will live on long after we are gone.

This is the first of the so-called American recordings, and arguably the best. The songs have been carefully selected by Cash, and I believe there is certainly something here for everyone. If you love music you will soon fall in love with this album. Most artists today don't have one percent of the emotional intensity that Cash had. I highly recommend this album without reservation.

Shhh...I've never told anyone this before but...I really love this album. It's partly due to nostalgia; as a child of the 90s this was everywhere, school discos, friends' parties, barbecues, radio, blasting out of every other car, etc etc. When punk and the Sex Pistols burst onto my musical landscape, this, along with Britney Spears etc, was thrown out- or rather moved downstairs onto my parents' cd rack- but listening back to it now I grudgingly admit that I quite enjoy it in a cheesy kind of way (thankfully Britney has long since left my household). It's not country music (cue cries of "sell-out" and 1-star reviews from outraged country music fans)- just great commercial, radio-friendly pop (played mostly by real people on real instruments unlike much of the chart ... Alison Krauss has one of the beautiful voices in modern music. But this album shows Union Station to be so much more than her stunning vocals. The stand out feature of this album is the musicianship of all members of the band. The addition of jerry douglas dobro has added a new layer to their compositions. This album is simply a must.

Most, if not all, of the four reviews already on this page, and the Amazon review itself, are mislocated or confuse this album (Spectrum 554 383-2) with another similar one (notice how the reviewers refer to tracks that are not, in fact, in this listing!). This particular album is not the original recordings, but one of those studio remakes from decades later, probably 1998 so far as can be told from the cover notes. Johnny sounds tired (how many times must he have sung 'Ring of Fire' before he came to make this?).

Of course, you get digital quality with a remake, but I'd much rather have the raw and passionate originals. Caveat emptor.

I'm 19, and I love Don Williams. I admit that I didn't hear of him until a few months ago, please don't hate me. I was sitting in ront of the computer in our living room, when I heard some really nice music coming from the kitchen where my mum was. I really like country music, especially Marty Robbins, Dolly Parton, and Lonestar, and I asked her who it was. She replied Don Williams, I went back to the computer, logged on the internet and bought this CD, and his love sogns cd, which really was a comfort when I was going through a bad patch after moving to university. 'Tears of the loney, keep falling all the time, Tears of the lonely never dry.' What a sad song! But it isn't on this cd, so if you want to hear it, you'll have to listen to the love songs cd.

Carryin' on With Johnny Cash and June Carter

There is some very nice stuff on here but there is also a track I believe after some considerable research to be the worst performance Mr C ever put down on tape. Its actually worth getting just for the car crash awfulness.
Jackson and Guitar Pickin Man being the best of the bunch. June's raggedy edged deep country voice is a pure joy compared to the plastic divas nashville serves up these days. Love to hear that growl mingling with the sweetness. Johnny is if anything a bit hesitant in his vocalising, compared to other work. If only he had been hesitant however in the cover of Ray Charles' What I Say.
