Billie Jo never made the front rank of female country singers in America despite having a long string of country hits, including a number one (Blanket on the ground). However, she toured overseas extensively and was enormously popular in Britain and Ireland. She had two top ten pop hits in the UK (Blanket on the ground, What I've got in mind) and two minor UK pop hits (Sing me an old fashioned song, I will survive). All these songs also made the American country charts.

I am a longstanding fan of Irish Traditional Music and so, when I was standing in a Birmingham record store quite a few years back and my ear caught the sound of "Happiness", I immediately asked the assistant the name of the band. I couldn't believe my ears at the clear and clean perfection of the sound. I've known this CD for a number of years and yet it always sounds virtually as fresh as the first time I heard it, very unusual for music which can be easily remembered - at least for me!

..if you have this double album!
That's the impression when playing this cd's. His acoustic guitar and famous voice,and that's all it takes. He's singing some rare favorites recorded in 1970's and talking to you between songs,explaining them, tellin' stories, just like if you have just bumped into his house.
Maybe it's not for average , causual fan but more for completist.
Similar to Grammy awareded 'American Recordings' CD, but more concentrated on gospel material & old country songs.

This is beautifully designed package, with cristal clear sound and with it's informal concept it brings Johnny Cash right in your room.

Johnny Cash himself said that this was his favourite album he ever made, so who are we to argue. This is a gospel album with out a doubt but do not let put you off. Every song on the album is personnal to Cash and picked for a real reason, the liner notes are worth the money alone. Just Cash and his guitar singing his favourites. Brilliant!!! a must for all Johnny Cash fans and all fans of gospel music.

I wouldn't say that this was the most 'Bluegrass' style CD that I have ever come across, but you will love this. Every track is fantastic.....a must have selection of tracks if you like Dolly Parton.
I love Bluegrass, and today's Bluegrass is very unlike the real true Bluegrass. So don't expect this album to give you that wonderful old sound....with incredible Banjo work etc.
But!....buy it anyway....it is a wonderful CD with that great Dolly singing voice.

Completely disagree with other reviewer, and seeing he bought it at a sale he shouldn't be carping. My wife bought this set for me as a Christmas present [from Amazon] a few years ago, and I love it. It states plainly on the Box that these are the Nashville Years recordings from 1961-1965, and that is the main reason I wanted this set, as I regard these items as some of Burl Ives greatest recordings, as marrying that unique voice to some great songs is a work of genius. This set contains a vast wealth of the various Styles that Burls' voice fitted like a glove. You have Cowboy Songs, Gospel Songs, Hawaiian Songs, 1940's. Pop songs ie.
