A consistently beautiful album, with sounds that seem to create space to think. I'm no expert on world music, and happened on this after hearing a radio review, but Astrakan Cafe seems to have a musical integrity of its own. I have sampled some of his more recent collaborations, and felt this album avoided the uneasy fusions of later work.

This is a live concert recording, so be prepared for clapping and an enthusiastic reception by the concert crowds. It is quintessential early Joan Baez, simply strumming her guitar and singing folk songs that she loves. It was recorded at various concerts during her tours in August 1962 and October/November 1963.
Her clear, sweet soprano is exquisite, and her choice of these thirteen folk songs should satisfy the most ardent purists. Truly, hers is the voice of an angel. For those of us who grew up with the music of Joan Baez, this recording is a glorious trip down memory lane.
The quality of this cd is what one may expect from such an early, live recording, as it suffers from an occasional lack of clarity and from a ... Read More:

I'm not a big fan of Bob, but borrowed this from a mate as "something different". After a couple of listens, I was absolutely hooked. To me, Bob albums drone on after a while (like after two tracks) but the styles and singers on this vary significantly. There's some great musicianship on offer, and my favourites are "Boots of Spanish Leather" and "Tomorrow is a long Time". I'd thoroughly recommend this to anyone who's into Bob, folkish music or something a bit off the beaten track.
