Another collection of Paxton's music described him as a 'troubador'. This wonderful re-release of two his earliest albums makes that point more forcefully than anything else I can think of.
Here are some of Tom's finest songs - from the gentle humour of 'Goin' to the zoo' and 'What did you learn in school today', to the honest romanticism of 'My lady's a wild flying dove'. But the true strength of this early music lies in Tom's songs about social justice (or, more accurately, social-injustice) and life in America in the 60's.
Take, for example, the brutal power of his lyrics in 'Goodman, Schwerner and Chaney', a song which recounts the ghastly murder ... Read More:

No one is better placed to get inside the heart of Dylan's songs than the woman who once had a place in his own heart. This is the only Dylan covers album you really need, because the soul and passion of her covers is unequalled and unable to be bettered.
It's all very well Judy Collins &c. churning out Dylan covers albums, we all know the songs are great, but what we have here is a radical reinterpretation sung with beauty, elegance and poise, wih backing musicians that Dylan used on John Wesley Harding who all know the songs very well, and flush them out into fuller accompaniments than the Zim permitted on JWH.
But what really counts here is the emotion behind her voice, in songs she clearly cares about and mean something to ... Read More:

This album by Bert Jansch and featuring (on some tracks) playing by Johnny Marr & Bernard Butler is the work of a genius. Superb moments of sublime playing exist on many of the tracks, particularly 'Crimson Moon,' 'Down Under,' and 'Fool's Mate.' Mr Jansch plays some bluesy electric guitar on 'Looking for Love' and there is a bonus CD of Bert's better known tracks from past times. Anyone who appreciates classy acoustic folk guitar playing will love this CD. Highly recommended.

Finally got my copy of Meg Baird's "Dear Companion" solo album on CD.
And it's wonderful!
I loved her vocals with Espers and wanted to hear more. Then there was the 7" single last year (both songs included on the album) and talk of a forthcoming solo album, which got me excited. Now it's here. This album allows her vocal talent to shine without some of the more noisy aspects of Espers swamping it. It's good selection of traditional songs, more recent covers and a couple of her own compositions.
A lovely folky acoustic album, with beautiful and sometimes delicate vocals.
Highly recommended.

This selection of prime cuts contains all of Joan Baez's best works, but some of the recordings are live. Warning: these songs are just as good, but you may have a preference of studio over 'live'.
"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a live recording, but misses none of the mood or flair of the single. "Please Come To Boston" is nearly better than the original and Joan captures the tenuous love longings with her voice. "Oh Happy Day" is given the justice and respect it deserves and "Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer" is still heartbreaking.
"Diamonds And Rust" is the first cut and with reason. It has to be her best written song/recording to date. Faded memories, lasting longings, the broken heart; ah, Joan Baez is truly gifted. Read More:
