When Delius wrote his own libretto in English based on Gottfried Keller's novel Die Leute von Seldwyla he took his title from an obvious resemblance to Shakespeare in the plot. For me there is another poem that keeps suggesting itself, and it is Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott. Changing Tennyson's pronoun from `she' to `they' I get a caption for this review. When I come to the sad outcome aboard the boat in each case I think `Singing, in their song they died'. The intriguing analogy, which may or may not be applicable, would be `The curse is come upon them'.

As a great fan of both Chris Barber and Duke Ellington I was expecting great things from this album, and wasn't disappointed. Recorded live in the mid seventies Barber also managed to include two memebers of Duke Ellington's orchestra (Russell Procope on alto sax and Clarinet, and Bill Davis on Piano) in his line up to bring an authentic feel to the proceedings. Listening to these recordings you can hear the respect which Barber and the rest of his Jazz and Blues band have for Ellington and, being live recordings, you can feel the sheer pleasure they had from playing in front of an audience. As usual with Chris Barber no one member of the band really dominates the proceedings, allowing everyone to have their say, as it where. Highlights ... Read More:

"Now then, Mr. Lyttelton, don't monkey with it there. Yeah, play that thing." Subtitled "One man went to blow," this is the second in a four-volume series presenting 100 original singles recordings made by Humph and his regular band as it evolved between 1949-59. "Monkeying" with the original 78's and re-mastering to the digital format has resulted in a product of excellect quality, clarity, and balance. Although these recordings are now 50 years old, it's not hard to imagine you are sitting in the front row of a live concert. The great thing about this CD is that all 25 are really good tracks, - a mixture of foot-tapping traditional numbers (e.g. Fidgety Feet, Chicago Buzz, The Dormouse, Hoppin' Mad, and of course, Don't Monkey With It); interspersed ... Chris Barber and his bands have been recording live sessions for almost 50 years. The personnel line-ups have varied slowly over the years, and following inevitable retirements this CD, recorded at a concert in December 1998, is an early introduction to John Defferary on clarinet/saxophone and Colin Miller on drums. Repertoires have also varied over the years, but quality remains, and the 13 tracks of this CD provide over 1 hour of brilliant jazz.
The CD starts with a vigorous version of the Chris Barber theme tune "Bourbon Street Parade". The energy of this number continues through an upbeat Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" with formidable live syncopation, and a performance of which King Oliver would be proud of his "Alligator ...
