I came to this disk with no prior knowledge of the Temperance Seven or their exploits in the world of jazz. Therefore the contents of the disk came as a very pleasant surprise. What I found was a series of twenty-eight lively and well played jazz numbers, some well known and others less so. For those who appreciate a tight jazz ensemble playing the old style jazz, and doing it well, this series of recordings will be most welcome, as it was for me. The sleeve notes are neatly presented, and although fairly brief, they do give a list of the players and a brief background about the recordings together with a photograph of the group in a session.

This CD is a collection made up from earlier records with typical trad jazz input for which Monty Sunshine is famed. However it is not just Monty Sunshine clarinet dominated, as all the musicians are superb with particularly forceful contributions from trombone, trumpet and banjo. There are opportunities for solos in addition to excellent ensemble playing, and though sometimes a little strained the music is always professional. There is a mixture of live and studio recordings, but all are equally well produced.
The choice of numbers is trad jazz inspired with everything from traditional pieces and spirituals to popular tunes and anything melodic in between. The first track is a German cradle song "Sleep My Little Prince" ... Read More:

Of all live recordings this one is up with the best (Berlin Deutschhalle, East Berlin, Nurnberg, Fairfiel Halls)- all concert locations on this 2 CD set find the pre "Jazz and Blues" line up at its liveliest with that springing forward momentum with which the Barber bands surpassed their UK trad contempories. This 3cd pack is an excellent buy for those fans of Chris wishing to hear how the band sounded in the late 60's and early 70's. It was, I feel a sort of "experimental" period for the Barber band, when it had shaken off the "trad" image, with the addition of electric guitars (although the banjo was still retained!)
The tracks are from two albums, "Drat That Frattle Rat" and "Get Rolling" - not generally well-known Barber recordings but well worth hearing if you have an open mind. Most of the tunes are pretty "obscure" although there are a few of the old Trad warhorses as well.Naturally the musicianship is up to the usual superb standard, with the addition on most of the tracks, of some younger progressive guest musicians (Rory Gallagher among ... There are some concert performances that can claim to be historic - This is one of them. I have a confession to make. This recently reissued CD is a compilation of two live recordings - Jazz concerts played at the Royal Festival Hall, London on October 30th 1954 {A} and January 9th 1955 {B}. All right, so I wasn't there in the flesh at the time - I wasn't (quite!) old enough - but listening to the live (October) broadcast on steam radio is one of my earliest musical memories. I subsequently owned the original Decca EP release which featured tracks 4,5,6 and 8 below.
The CD starts with the announcement '...And now we come to the top of the bill, Chris Barber'. And what a billing it is. Chris Barber was a legend in his own time (still is) ... Read More:
