There are some concert performances that can claim to be historic - This is one of them. I have a confession to make. This recently reissued CD is a compilation of two live recordings - Jazz concerts played at the Royal Festival Hall, London on October 30th 1954 {A} and January 9th 1955 {B}. All right, so I wasn't there in the flesh at the time - I wasn't (quite!) old enough - but listening to the live (October) broadcast on steam radio is one of my earliest musical memories. I subsequently owned the original Decca EP release which featured tracks 4,5,6 and 8 below.
The CD starts with the announcement '...And now we come to the top of the bill, Chris Barber'. And what a billing it is. Chris Barber was a legend in his own time (still ... Read More:

Bought this CD after seeing Chris Barber on Jools Holland show.
I have to say that it has re-awakened music in me. Real musicians playing real music. What an uplifting experience. I could feel the pleasure that the musicians were sharing and could hardly stop myself from bopping around every time I played it.Strangely enough, I was not a particular fan of Chris Barber in my earlier years, but maybe I have grown into quality music and the interaction of quality musicians.
Five star for sure.

Ten of these fifteen tracks feature the legendary trumpet player Louis 'Shots' Madison. Madison (1899-1948) was placed in the same New Orleans Waif's Home as Louis Armstrong, around 1911 where he also learned to play in the Home's band. He made his first recordings with Oscar 'Papa' Celestin's New Orleans Jazz Orchestra in 1925. During the Depression years of the 1930's Madison worked mainly in brass bands for parades, funerals and other occasions. This was certainly where he developed his powerful, rich, brassy tone. Less inventive or dynamic than Armstrong, he was a strong middle range player. From the mid 1930's to early 1940's he was one of the three trumpeters in the Eureka Brass Band. Percy Humphrey, later leader of the band, said that the ... Read More:

In the twenties, thirties and early forties, a lot of pop music was jazz-based. The jazz influence in pop music faded rapidly during the 1940's, but jazz musicians staged a mini-comeback in the late fifties and early sixties in Britain. Chris Barber, Dave Brubeck and Acker Bilk all had one or two hits, but Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen had a whole string of hits. Kenny was a trumpeter. Other musicians played the trombone, drums, clarinet, banjo and bass. Most of their music was instrumental, but they did record some vocal tracks.
Their first hit was Samantha, a cover of a song from the movie High Society. That was followed by their biggest and most famous hit, Midnight in Moscow. Other hits included March of the Siamese children, Green leaves ... Read More:

Bunk was one of the creators of jazz in the early years of the 20th century, and became an icon to the generations who rediscovered the music in the 40s and later. He was the master if understated lyricism and restrained power. The first 8 tracks could have come from a lively evening in an Edwardian parlour, and display the sheer beauty of Bunk's tone, along with Don Ewell's warm accompaniment. The remaining tracks, recorded with the more familiar band featuring George Lewis and Jim Robinson, are among his finest, and capture the atmosphere of that dance night you never wanted to end. Maybe it was the fact of playing and improvising on currently popular tunes, rather than digging up the past, that gave these performances such freshness. If you want only ... Read More:
