This is the type of chilled and quirky hip-hop music you hear in cool backstreet skate shops or record shops, but you're never sure who it's by. It has a cool hip-hop style, but is edgy and different as it is mainly instrumental with a huge jazz influence.
The coolest jazz breakbeats and blues melodies are cut 'n' pasted together and driven by hard, syncopated beats and fat bass lines, along with erratic scratching and neat samples. Some tracks such as the groove of New Rhumba, have an upbeat latin american flavour, with crazy piano ostinatos, others such as Sugarcuts' Duid Deed are slow and smooth, with loitering Portishead-esque bass grooves accompanied by sharp tunes and a plump, bubbling scratchiness. Ok, first things first - this is only really an E.P - it's only just over 20 minutes long, but what you get is real tight. It doesn't tail off or get a little monotonous like Anti-Theft Device. Everyone into 'proper' DJing should have this. But if you don't like this type of thing you should buy it anyway. Expand your mind and your record collection - it's less than a tenner - what have you got to lose?
