This album is one of the best if not the best live albums I own. The show has superb reviews already and that goes without saying. I give it five stars not only for the performance but also the recording. If you turn it up loud and shut your eyes you can imagine the "Sands" with the slight crowd noise and odd "chinking" of the glasses in the audience and really feel and almost see that you are right in the middle of the auditorium with this fantastic band in front of you along with the worlds greatest singer - it's that good!

A different sort of Christmas album, Harry Connick's CD features the big band sound, strong drums throughout, large choruses in many songs--and Harry Connick. With toe-tapping rhythms and a casual, relaxed attitude prevailing, Connick presents many swingy versions of traditional songs and a number of quiet, soft ballads, accompanied by strings and chorales. Subtlety is not part of the pattern here--the music is, for the most part, bold, celebratory, and full of spirit--with the drums setting the beat and emphasizing the rhythms. The romance of the ballads is emphasized by violins and female choruses.

I take the cynical view: After the comparatively phenomenal success of the previous year's "Breezin'", I believe Benson and the people behind him figured they'd cash by giving the people even more of what they'd concluded they wanted. And let's be honest; although the instrumental title track of that album was all over the radio too, it was the vocal track "This Masquerade" that was the real big hit. A Grammy winner, no less.

So this time, Benson goes for not just one vocal track, not just two, not three but a whole FOUR! - "Nature Boy", "The World Is A Ghetto", "Gonna Love You More" and "Everything Must Change" - launching the album (and his career) fully into pop territory. It isn't just the haunting quality of Billie Holiday's voice that captivates the listener, but the unique way she manoeuvred it between and around the written notes in a way that gave an added dimension to everything she sang, whilst respecting the songwriter's intentions. So it is here, in these late recordings, made less than eighteen months before her untimely death. It's short measure, but 45 minutes was fairly standard for an LP when these tracks were recorded, and what could you add that would not detract from what is here? Of course the voice is not the glorious instrument it once was, but to criticise these recordings for that decline is to miss the point.
