After the long and irratating introduction by Howard Cosell on track 1 (they could have fitted another song in instead) you soon realise that this is still a high class album.

After this poor start 'The Lady is a Tramp' and 'I Get A Kick Out of You' quickly rescue matters and show that Sinatra's voice was still in fine shape, if not quite as good as 10 or twenty years earlier. Hardly surprising though as he was approaching 60 when this recording was made. However that classic timbre and his marvellous phrasing compensate for any slight deterioation in his voice. Flirting With Twilight

This time it's lovely. On previous excursions Kurt has indulged on occasions in overly-showy (although undoubtedly masterful) vocal and verbal gymnastics and in the process created music that doesn't sustain repeated listens. On this album, he has chosen mostly standards- and there are some gorgeous tunes amongst them: "I'm Through With Love", "You Don't Know What Love Is" and Sondheim's "Not While I'm Around". His band sounds excellent as always. While not as satisfying as "This Time It's Love", his last and best album, Flirting With Twilight is very very good. Perhaps the album could do with more light and shade- it's a little bit on the sleepy side- but a very worthy addition to any jazz vocals fan's collection.

Greatest Hits [European Import]

Being a long time fan of Mose Allison and possessing several of his albums on vinyl I eventually decided to upgrade to CD format. I purchased this CD along with Swinging Machine and Autumn Song. Although already having most of the tracks it was a pleasure to hear them without the crackling and hissing accumulated over many decades of listening. As an introduction to the unique blues/jazz laid back style of Mose Allison, in both his piano playing and singing, this album is highly recommended. After listening to this you will be ready to sample his other works. Highly recommended!

Much of Louis Armstrong's long music career embraced roles as showman and pop celebrity, but above all he was a master jazz horn player. I admire Louis Armstrong for his scintillating high notes, rich tones, delicate phrasing and superb timing. This CD captures Louis Armstrong with his All-Stars band some 30 years after his early days in New Orleans and after his great days with King Oliver and his own Hot Fives and Sevens. For me these were the best times, but after a big band/orchestra stage in the 1930s and first half of the 1940s the smaller ensemble approach of the All-Stars is a good next best.
