Benson followed "In Flight" with this live album, recorded at The Roxy in Hollywood on the 30th of September, 1st of October and 2nd of October 1977. Everyone who played on the previous album is here on this one and it's a great collection of 11 songs, again produced by Tommy LiPuma. The standout for me, is the hit "On Broadway" with its memorable beat break served up by Harvey Mason and Ralph MacDonald.
Benson's version here of "Down Here On The Ground" is another personal favourite of mine, as is "Lady Blue", and he also does a live version of "The Greatest Love Of All", the original version of which was a huge hit for Benson in 1977, off the soundtrack to the Muhammad Ali movie "The Greatest". Personally, I prefer the studio ... Read More:

I shall say right now that I'm not one of those people who've got themselves all chewed up over whether she sings blues or jazz. That said, I've always felt she sounds at her best when singing blues. She has the emotional depth of interpretation that genuine blues requires and in that she is a singer of rare quality in that field in this modern age. So, I was overjoyed with Belly of The Sun as she returns unapologetically back to the Mississippi landscape of her origins, finds an old abandoned railway station to record in, (what unique acoustics) and gets right down to business during a sweltering August. The first track "The Weight" comes in with a slightly Latin feel, very gentle, easy summer evening over a pitcher of Margueritas. "Justice" ... Read More:

This is 60 tracks of Ella, mostly from her years on Decca in the 40's and early 50's, before Norman Grantz picked her up for his Verve label. The Decca recordings are of a high quality for their age. Bing Crosby ensured that the label he was also signed to, used the best most up to date equipment.
A few tracks dip back to her earlier work with Chick Webb's band, including their monster hit from 1938 'A Tisket A Tasket'
I don't have the energy or time to list all the tracks. Most are fairly pop slanted. There are few real jazz nuggets, and duets with Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and The Ink Spots etc. Then there is the Be-bop magic of 'How High The Moon'. Ella's musicality, her tonal purity and mirth, infuse the whole ... Read More:

... and, wow, it really is...
Showing Coltrane's mellow and romantic side (also seen on his "My Favorite Things"), this album brings the great and precise vocalist Hartman into Coltrane's classical band and together they create something so delicate and subtle I hardly believed it when I heard it. This means that Tyner's intelligent piano and Garrison's and Jones' unobtrusive rhythmical support are also essential for this musical triumph.
Is it modern jazz? Is it musically conservative? Answers to both questions should probably be in the affirmative; great music is often too complex to be placed in neatly divided groups...
Coltrane's tone is, I must admit, far from being among my favorite sounds in jazz, but on ... Read More:

This is an album of the most magical, achingly beautiful music-making. It really is one of those records which, in the words of one of the numbers so lusciously performed here, "makes a cloudy day sunny." There was no kind of popular song written between 1920 and 1960 that Ella Fitzgerald couldn't handle, and as a result, it's almost absurd to compare one of her albums with another. However, for sheer, transcendent beauty it's hard to beat this set of gorgeously rendered ballads. For what it's worth, it would be one of about five discs I would try to save from a house fire.
Ella Fitzgerald's 'concept' albums of the late 1950s and early '60s for the Verve label are all at least the equal of Frank Sinatra's, pressed for Capitol during the same years. ... Read More:
