This is a wonderful set of songs which show off Natalie's singing talents brilliantly. The songs are quite traditionally done with a big band orchestra, but natalie's sweet voice always shines through.
The highlights of the album are the beautiful ballads, the melencholy 'Lush Life' and the superb medley of 'for sentimental reasons, tenderly, Autumn Leaves'. The upbeat tracks that shine through are 'Orange Coloured Sky' and the brilliantly arranged 'Almost Like Being in Love'
This album I feel will apeal to most tastes, especially those who love the songs of Nat King Cole. It is an album full of highlights, the only song I don't really like is the 'duet' of Unforgettable. I feel she would have been much better off singing ... Read More:

- the legendary Fred Astaire's audition card! Well, I think he can sing as well as dance a little. Anyone who likes Fred Astaire will love this album, which includes all his best hits from films including Top Hat, Carefree, Shall we Dance, and Swing Time... Unfortunately, it does not include Ginger Rogers, but I love it anyway! A romantic hero of a time when the world was in a Depression, Fred Astaire will brighten up anyone's day and will live on forever in the hearts of people throughout the world.

Can't honestly say I'd call DK a jazz artist on this showing but it is an extremely enjoyable album. If it might be termed easy-listening it certainly is easy to listen to. How it is categorized hardly matters it's an incredibly playable album, very well produced, beautifully played. The vocals are delightfully sung, and Miss Krall really can carry emotion and feeling with a tune, by turns, injecting romance, humour, pathos, and wit.

What a magnificent CD!
I heard this album in the LP form at the beginnings of my explorations into jazz but, as the CD era started, I was warned that the 80's CD of "Armstrong plays W. C. Handy" contains inferior alternate versions.
The producer George Avakian explains in this 1997 CD what happened and how painstaking and meticolous research and restoration resulted in this issue, basically equall to the original album, although the recording company had lost not only masters but the back-up copies as well. So, all the compliments go to Mr. Avakian, the producer and the restorer of this music.
This is one of my favorite jazz albums and I feel it proves that Louis in the 50's could very well reach his Hot fives and Hot seven hights. ... Read More:

Many compilations are titled best of or very best of, but this one really is. Most of the collection is made up of Peggy’s recordings for Capitol, but EMI (who own Capitol) got permission from other companies to include Black coffee, He’s a tramp and Siamese cat song – the most important recordings of those she didn’t record for Capitol.
The rest of the collection includes all the essentials including Fever, the novelty song Manana and The folks who live on the hill. I find Peggy’s version of Big spender much more appealing than Shirley Bassey’s more aggressive version of the song.
This collection demonstrates Peggy’s versatility –upbeat swinging songs, slow, sexy songs, Disney songs, Latin-flavored ... Read More:

I rarely listen to swing or jazz and have therefore never appreciated mainstream Sinatra. Typically of this musical genre, orchestrations rely heavily on improvisatory jazz harmonics, and the singing often resorts to mauling around the timing and intonation of melodic lines to achieve the signature vocal style. Of course these are the very qualities that many will find so appealing in Sinatra's better known music. This style remains evident in his early melancholy themed compilations with Nelson Riddle such as "In The Wee Small Hours" and "Only The Lonely", and these albums may be preferred by those who enjoy conventional Sinatra.
So why is this album different?
Gone is the 'Come Fly With Me' style. Instead there are lush, soaring string orchestrations (perhaps ... Read More:

If you are a jazz fan and don't know Betty Carter, what a treat you have in store with this CD. Carter is a totally free spirit, almost abandoning the melody, sometimes, to play with it on her own terms, going in new directions and interacting with her accompanists to create new sounds, even on "standards." And she obviously LOVES what she is doing, one of the few performers who really has fun every minute she is on stage (and several tracks here are recorded live). The result is a CD that makes the listener as happy as the performer--an upbeat, bebop, scat-filled, and uptempo collection that never lets down for an instant.
Carter blends with her band(s) on many tracks, the timbre of her voice sometimes sounding like a "blatty" trumpet and sometimes like a mellow ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite Harry Connick Jr albums I possess. He clearly relishes what he does as his vocal performance on here is top quality. His arrangements are pretty sharp too. He fuses his own songs with old jazz standards and brings them together in an excellent package.
It starts off at a gallop with the impressive 'Nowhere With Love' then continues in the same vein with 'Come By Me' and 'Charade' and finishes off with the wonderful rendition of 'Cry Me A River' and 'Love For Sale'. My favourites on here are the opening two tracks 'Nowhere With Love', 'Come By Me' and possibly 'Time After Time'.
Whenever I listen to this album, it brings a smile to my face and makes me feel good inside. All the arrangements and singing are great and it seems ... Read More:
