I'm a huge fan of DK and I love her treatments of the great jazz ballads but I was ready for something new. I didn't know what to make of this album initially but by the third listening I knew it was going to be one I couldn't live without.
I love singers in their own words; they seem to have a special power and whilst the covers on here are great it's the new songs that stay with you - and stay with you - especially Departure Bay. One of my top ten all time albums.

The Tender Trap

This review is much belated, as I first became aware of Stacey Kent on the Michael Parkinson show, singing the title track of this CD, on it's release, in front of a big band.

It is no secret that Parky loves Big Bands, and this one was probably conducted by Laurie Holloway.

It was a surprise when I immediately bought the CD and discovered no Big Band, just the small group of (superlative) musicians that accompany her on all her recordings (since changed for Breakfast on the morning tram).

While I thoroughly enjoy all of Stacey Kent's CDs, I can't help but hanker for one CD, or even a couple of tracks, to be with a Big Band. I can't imagine why Mr Parkinson has not been able to persuade her to do it, even ... Read More:

The majority of people will have heard of Will Downing as he’s been around a long time having been a session singer with Rose Royce and Billy Ocean.

His biggest hits were in the late eighties with Love Supreme and his interpretation of Denice Williams’s Free.

This is a mid price offering of some of his more popular hits/covers and would be filed in the soul jazz category.

The collection includesthe hits you would expect John Coltranes, A love Supreme which is one of my favourite records of all time, the love we share, giving it all to you a superb slice of soul with a killer bass line in the background. If you are a jazz fan and don't know Betty Carter, what a treat you have in store with this CD. Carter is a totally free spirit, almost abandoning the melody, sometimes, to play with it on her own terms, going in new directions and interacting with her accompanists to create new sounds, even on "standards." And she obviously LOVES what she is doing, one of the few performers who really has fun every minute she is on stage (and several tracks here are recorded live). The result is a CD that makes the listener as happy as the performer--an upbeat, bebop, scat-filled, and uptempo collection that never lets down for an instant.

Natural Woman/Is That All There Is

Peggy mixes contemporary material with older songs on these two album, but whatever she sings, she does it her way brilliantly.

The first album, Natural woman, contains covers of All of a sudden my heart sings (Kathryn Grayson - from the movie Anchors aweigh), Don't smoke in bed (Billie Holiday), Can I change my mind (Tyrone Davis), Dock of the bay (Otis Redding), You make me feel like a natural woman (Aretha Franklin), Everyday people (Sly and the family Stone), Please send me someone to love (Percy Mayfield), Spinning wheel (Blood sweat and tears) and I think it's gonna rain today (Randy Newman). May of these are classic songs but Peggy's often-different interpretations bring a freshness to them.

The Look Of Love

Although Diana Krall might not be first choice for the best jazz singer in the world she still manages to drip her lyrics like honey over the already sumptuous arrangements in this collection of standards. Her vocals are at once languid and precise, distant and intense and when added to the bittersweet, fully orchestral back-ups, it all comes together in a most intoxicating way. A definite grower; for the impatient listener a first take might be their last but with subsequent plays, the nuances blossom until you realise that you are hearing something rather special.

Feeling Good

Very much agree with the previous reviewer. The version of "My Baby Just Cares For Me" on this CD is not the well-known, uplifting, bouncy version we all know and love, but an inferior version. Disappointing.
