AS AN AVID fan of musical theatre, I was expecting the Gershwin collection, as sung by Ella and Louis, to be a tour de force of varied jazz styles and supreme vocals: I was not disappointed. Along with sublime piano (courtesy Oscar Peterson) on many tracks and a strong brass section, Ella and Louis make "Our Love is Here Stay" a cornerstone of any respectable jazz collection. In particular "A Woman is a Sometime Thing", "A Foggy Day", "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off", the title track and of course the monumental "Summertime" stand out as exemplifiying the sort of quality music produced by these two jazz powerhouses. Buy it.

There's no one on earth who can tell a story in song better than Shirley Horn, who can turn the quietest whisper into a powerful narrative moment, and in this CD, in which she sings about the many aspects of love, she is brilliant. Recorded in 1990, this was her first #1 jazz album in a career which she had postponed from the early sixties till late seventies, while she was bringing up her children. Always one of Miles Davis's favorite singers, she invites him here as a guest soloist.
Horn is a complete musician, and on this CD, she has planned every aspect of the recording. Having done all the arrangements and selected each soloist for his specific talents on specific songs, she ensures that the totality is exactly the interpretation ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite Harry Connick Jr albums I possess. He clearly relishes what he does as his vocal performance on here is top quality. His arrangements are pretty sharp too. He fuses his own songs with old jazz standards and brings them together in an excellent package.
It starts off at a gallop with the impressive 'Nowhere With Love' then continues in the same vein with 'Come By Me' and 'Charade' and finishes off with the wonderful rendition of 'Cry Me A River' and 'Love For Sale'. My favourites on here are the opening two tracks 'Nowhere With Love', 'Come By Me' and possibly 'Time After Time'.
Whenever I listen to this album, it brings a smile to my face and makes me feel good inside. All the arrangements and singing ... Read More:

In this most unusual album, Sarah Vaughan conjures up images of after hours performances in smoke-filled clubs, where a few sad and lonely people nurse their drinks and listen to a solitary singer crooning softly. Here Vaughan sings "pure," without a big band behind her, without sharing the stage with a jazz superstar, and without any restrictions on her own interpretations. Accompanied only by a guitar (Mundell Lowe) and a bass (George Duvivier), both of which play quietly in the background, Vaughan turns in a remarkable performance, recording her most intimate album, one in which she makes the listener feel as if each song is sung for him/her and no one else.
Her famous versatility is on display here, but it is far more subtle than in most of her other ... Read More:

Recorded at Carnegie Hall on two nights in April, 1959, this CD contains the full concert--all nineteen songs--unlike a previously released CD of this concert which omits four songs. Singing work songs and traditional folk songs for the first half of the concert, Belafonte switches, after the intermission, to novelty songs and some of the most famous of all his international folk songs before concluding, as he so often does, with "Matilda."
Opening with "Wake Up, Wake Up, Darlin' Cora," Belafonte holds key notes for several extra beats, prolonging the song's wailing sadness and stunning the audience with the song of a man who has been treated like a "dirty dog" and who now leaves "Darlin' Cora" behind as he takes to the road after a confrontation with his ... I first heard this guy when my dad bought the video of a live show back in the Nineties. Recently I thought I would buy a copy of the album, its brilliant, not a bad song on it and I would recommend it to anyone.

This compilation is drawn from Cleo Laine's RCA albums recorded between 1974 and 1996. Over this period she recorded many albums of various themes and styles. Therefore this 2CD set features a mixture of jazz, Broadway and pop. Cleo Laine's beautiful voice and wide range is showcased on great songs like "Just A-Sittin' and A-Rockin'", "It Don't Mean a Thing," plus "Bess You Is My Woman" and "My Man's Gone Now" from her duet album with Ray Charles "Porgy and Bess". Also includes famous Laine songs outside of jazz, "Send In The Clowns", "He Was Beautiful" and "Streets of London". This collection is a good introduction to Laine's back catalogue, and will give the listener the opportunity to decide whether they want to delve deeper into her jazz, pop or Broadway albums.
