Recorded at Carnegie Hall on two nights in April, 1959, this CD contains the full concert--all nineteen songs--unlike a previously released CD of this concert which omits four songs. Singing work songs and traditional folk songs for the first half of the concert, Belafonte switches, after the intermission, to novelty songs and some of the most famous of all his international folk songs before concluding, as he so often does, with "Matilda."
Opening with "Wake Up, Wake Up, Darlin' Cora," Belafonte holds key notes for several extra beats, prolonging the song's wailing sadness and stunning the audience with the song of a man who has been treated like a "dirty dog" and who now leaves "Darlin' Cora" behind as he takes to the road after ... I first heard this guy when my dad bought the video of a live show back in the Nineties. Recently I thought I would buy a copy of the album, its brilliant, not a bad song on it and I would recommend it to anyone.

This compilation is drawn from Cleo Laine's RCA albums recorded between 1974 and 1996. Over this period she recorded many albums of various themes and styles. Therefore this 2CD set features a mixture of jazz, Broadway and pop. Cleo Laine's beautiful voice and wide range is showcased on great songs like "Just A-Sittin' and A-Rockin'", "It Don't Mean a Thing," plus "Bess You Is My Woman" and "My Man's Gone Now" from her duet album with Ray Charles "Porgy and Bess". Also includes famous Laine songs outside of jazz, "Send In The Clowns", "He Was Beautiful" and "Streets of London". This collection is a good introduction to Laine's back catalogue, and will give the listener the opportunity to decide whether they want to delve deeper into her jazz, ... Read More:

This is a wonderful album with wonderful songs and - especially - a wonderful Ella Fitzgerald. Her voice is more beautiful than ever, but unfortunately her voice plays second fiddle on this album. Nelson Riddle arranged the songs a bit too rich for my taste. The spotlights are for his orchestra. Riddle clearly wanted a change from his previous work with Fitzgerald. His arrangements are a lot less subtle than on the Gershwin Song Book. Especially on Day In, Day Out, where the voice cannot keep up with the brass power. It does work on some songs, though. Especially Something's Got To Give is very good. And when the orchestra mellows a little on the slow songs, like I Remember You, it's magic.

HAVING HAD A GOOD FEW SIMONE ALBUMS AND HAVING ENJOYED THEM THIS WAS A BIG LET DOWN-HER VOICE IS NOT AT ITS BEST AND THE MATERIAL IS NOT GREAT APART FROM A COUPLE OF GOOD TRACKS-OVERALL A BIG LET DOWN -IF YOU BUY THIS AS YOUR FIRST NINA ALBUM THEN HAVE FAITH THERE ARE SOME FANTASTIC ALBUMS BUT THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM-DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

The first, arranged by Nelson Riddle and conducted by Frank Sinatra (an interesting combination that works well) was recorded in 1957. An earlier reviewer on the USA site suggests that Peggy was then just an up-and-coming singer, but all true Peggy fans know that she began her career with Benny Goodman in 1941 and went on to become a major solo singer of the late forties and early fifties, so she was firmly established by 1957.
That 1957 album opens with The man I love, written by George and Ira Gershwin and is filled with songs from the Great American Songbook, some of them obscure, but including That's all and Something wonderful. It closes with a song that is always identified with Peggy - The folks who live on the hill.

I much prefer Norah Jones on this even though 'Come way with me' is great. I wish she would do more jazz than country. This album is superb and deserves to be known more. 'New York City' is my favourite track.

Fans of Rob Reiner's 1989 romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally..." will tell you that this Harry Connick, Jr. album that's sold in the Movie Soundtrack section of most music emporiums (including online stores such as this) is not, in fact, from the original motion picture soundtrack. Instead, Columbia Records released this non-soundtrack as When Harry Met Sally...Music From the Motion Picture. Yes, the songs played and sung here by Connick were heard in the movie...but most of them were performed by other artists. This doesn't mean the album is bad; it's not. It just isn't an "original soundtrack album."
That having been said, this 10-track set is an enjoyable collection of romantic standards, some of them now over six decades ... Read More:

I bought this CD for my wife who is already a huge Ella fan. If you can not afford to go 'the whole hog' and buy all of the Songbooks, then this is the perfect buy for you. It is all of the best!

I'm a rock music fan really, but I'll try anything; labels say nothing about quality. It's tempting to say that MT are old-fashioned, but they are simply a brilliant vocal quartet who wander through every shade of music. This album harks back mainly to the 1930s, but there is one original song, the soulful, disco-oriented 'Clap Your Hands,' and a cover of The Chiffons' 1960s pop hit, 'Sweet Talking Guy.' They squeeze the juice out of melodies with pure harmonies and never miss a cue. The gentle sway and soar of 'Gloria' is a personal favourite, as is the charming 'Java Jive.' Amid the respect MT give these songs, however, there seems to be an unspoken sense of humour. No expense is spared on the instrumental backing either, with big band jazz to order ... Read More:
