I had the great fortune to listen to Buddha-bar VIII by Sam Popat last year... WOW! How amazing. I was completely mesmerised by the captivating sounds created by Popat. On the premise that the earlier works would be just as spell-binding, I purchased Buddha-Bar I & II by Claude Challe.... Absolutely awful. What a waste of money. I was completely disappointed by all 4 CD's... not even 1 song captured my attention... nothing, nada, I found it boring, and I actually made myself sit through every song, in the hope that out of 4 CD's I might find at least 1 song that flirted with my senses, but I was not lucky enough. I am not impressed by Claude Challe, and I will certainly remember the name simply to avoid it in future. He reminds me of Enigma ... Read More:

This compilation offers a excellent combination of hymns and welsh folk songs, with brilliant quality sound. Unlike some other Welsh Male voice CD's the singing is not drowned out by an organ or have an underemphasis on one of the parts. Easily the best Welsh male voice I've bought and it has become a much appreciated present to many relatives.
Rick Turner, founder of the fable Alembic Guitars Company, is a friend of Ry Cooder. He played him an album recorded by Vishwa Mohan Bhatt for Water Lily Acoustics. Bhatt is an Indian musician who conceived and plays an instrument called the "mohan vina" which, used with a metal slide, strongly recalls a slide guitar.
Cooder, a master of the latter instrument, was so moved by what he heard that he decided to meet Bhatt. Subsequently, both recorded this instrumental gem of an album.
The recording sessions were very loose and the music was entirely improvised.
The interplay between those two master musicians is such that, as the music progresses, Ry's guitar lines start bending their heads toward India ... Read More:

I have just received this album. It is a brilliant mix of laid back tunes, a fusion of different styles of music. For example, on Disc 1 track 3 'Sleep' is a beautiful chillout song, track 4 'Yes, Boss' is a fantastic electronic song and track 5 'Koop Island Blues' sets a new standard for chilled jazz.
There are no fillers, all the music is excellent and I am already looking forward to Volume X.

From Art Garfunkel introducing the band to us up to the present day, this is the best all round collection of African music. It is not trying to be too religious or too international. All the music is absorbing, tribal and african. It can be listened to in background or very loud. I would gladly have paid more for this collection.

I've never reviewed an album on Amazon before, but I have to just stop by and echo the comments of almost everyone else here.... A superb album, where melodic piano notes intertwine beautifully with Indian tabla and Spanish guitar, underpinned by a drum- and- bassy line.
Yes Sawhney does put across a strong political message throughout the album, but I feel the soundbites really add something to an already excellent piece of work.
Tracks 1,2,5,& 7 are particular favourites of mine.

Everything the other reviews say -- and more -- applies to the wonderful first disk. Buy this album without hesitation. My four-star classification stems from the bland and dispiriting second disk which contains recordings clearly made to exploit the Bhundu Boys' success. Any of them could be used as the theme music to TV's Holiday 2006. So, 5 stars plus for the first disk and only 3 for the second.
