Nobody else sounds quite like Yann Tiersen. If you've watched the delightful movie "Amelie", you will no doubt have been intrigued by Tiersen's quirky, sly and entertaining score. Some of the music from the film comes from his back catalogue, and what a varied and individual body of work it is.
There can be no genre pigeon-holing for Tiersen, because he is very much his own man. Clever, intelligent, very musical, and not afraid to absorb classical/traditional and outright cheesy influence from French music of all kinds.

Professional folk musicians keep saying that the album is so interesting because of the mixture of styles the album is presenting with as well as the new territory Martyn has entered. That is all true, and the album also is also very danceable, that is if you like a little bit of variation and improvisation in your movements.
But for me music, as with any art, is in the first place about what it tells me: As far as I am concerned this album is BURSTING with passion and the subtitle of GRIT could easily be: "Martyn's last second alive". I only occasionally dear to listen to this album, but when I do it is always inspiring!

This is the best abum I have bought in years. Every single track is a winner AND it is over an hour long. It took me a little while to fully appreciate it, but now I cannot stop playing it. Also, it being mostly in Spanish, it is hard to remember and so it seems to stay fresh. Aside from Lila's amazing voice the musicians are first rate. I saw her at the WOMAD Festival in 2002 which is how I discovered her, but this album is the best.

My husband and I really love this album. The songs are easy to listen to and are very uplifting. If you have an open mind about music then give it a try - you're sure to love it!

I was surprised to find no one had reviewed this yet. It can only be because people want to keep this amazing discovery to themselves, surely? From the first bars of "Isla Mujeres", you know you are in for something special. I've listened to a lot of flamenco - and one of my favourite flamenco guitarists, Tito Alcedo, is featured prominently on this album - but it has never had quite this North African twang or breadth of vision to it before; it's as if someone has taken your Andalucian pollo al ajillo and added a dash of turmeric and cumin, turning it into a Moroccan tagine. Ruibal is based near Cadiz, from where you can see the North African coast, and that area is an obvious influence, as in the superb "Vino y Besos" and "Por La Puerta de Elvira". ... Read More:

My only sighting of the Wayward Sheiks was at Bishopstock 2001 when they were projected from the lunchtime snooze slot to virtual top billing at 10pm when Johnny Winter was too unwell to play. (Good to hear he is now much better). My first impression was that players from four different groups on the way to other gigs had been hijacked and pushed on stage to perform. This was their appearance not their playing. Admittedly the Nigerian brothers on drums and bass were similar, but Salah Dawson Miller looked straight out of the Wild West, Justin Adams a biker and Andy Cox on a rare outing from his daytime job at the undertakers. However, the music soon took over and went from interesting to fascinating, as well as entertaining. Justin's playing ... Read More:
The world outside Cuba discovered Ibrahim Ferrer's soft, smoky vocals through the release of the Grammy-winning "Bueno Vista Social Club" released on the World Circuit/Nonesuch label. Ferrer sang four of the 12 non-instrumental tunes on the album. With Ry Cooder, he later recorded two further CD's for the label (in 1999 and 2003, respectively.)
Ibrahim Ferrer's favourite musical form was the "bolero." In 2005, he set out to record an album featuring only such pieces. Ferrer died in August 2005 before having completed the project.
However, he left behind high-quality demos, which received some posthumous instrumental overdubbing. Together with the beautiful "Melodía del Río", a 1998 track produced by Ry Cooder, these tracks are ... Read More:
